Rheinmetall's Margin Puzzle: JPMorgan Sounds Alarm as Shares Test €1,000 Floor

JPMorgan put Rheinmetall on a Negative Catalyst Watch over its revenue mix, sending shares briefly below €1,000 before they recovered.

Rheinmetall's stock briefly dipped below the €1,000 threshold on Thursday — its first trip under that level since July — after JPMorgan placed the German defense contractor on a "Negative Catalyst Watch." The shares touched roughly €989 intraday before recovering to €1,017.20, a gain of 0.7% over Wednesday's close of €1,010.00.

The catalyst for the decline was not a downgrade of the fundamental rating, which JPMorgan left at "Neutral," but a warning about the composition of Rheinmetall's future revenue.

The margin question at the heart of JPMorgan's caution

Analyst David Perry points to a shift in Rheinmetall's sales mix as the source of potential earnings risk. A growing share of revenue is expected to come from newer products — missiles, digital systems and drones — at the expense of established divisions such as ammunition and manned land vehicles.

The catch, according to JPMorgan: the traditional businesses generate high margins, while the emerging growth areas are frequently run through joint ventures. Because such JVs are only partially consolidated in the group's accounts, reported results could take a hit.

Political uncertainty surrounding Europe's defense buildup and doubts about the operational execution of recently announced record orders add to the bank's concerns. JPMorgan has tied its final assessment to Rheinmetall's capital markets day in November, when management is expected to provide greater clarity on the future revenue mix.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Investors have already voted with their feet. The stock has shed about 34% year-to-date and 44% over twelve months. It sits 49% below its 52-week high of €2,007.00, reached on October 3 of last year, and trades 27% under its 200-day moving average — a stark illustration of how badly the medium-term trend has deteriorated.

Open-source interfaces and a fresh US order

Operationally, Rheinmetall continues to deliver. American Rheinmetall, the group's US subsidiary, on Thursday secured a $7.28 million order for twelve Mission Master SP autonomous vehicles plus five amphibious marine kits. The end customer is the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory, with the contract administered through the Defense Logistics Agency and ADS Inc. as prime contractor. The systems rely on PATH autonomy technology and are designed for operations in coastal regions.

Separately, Rheinmetall published key interfaces of its Battlesuite platform — the Onboard and Tactical APIs — as open source on GitHub. The move is intended to simplify the integration of partner systems, though it was overshadowed on the trading day by the analyst warning.

Timo Haas, CEO of the Digital Systems division, frames the initiative as a push toward standardized interfaces for modular, interoperable systems. Ervin Kolenovic expects shorter development cycles and lower integration risks for partners and customers. The Battlesuite serves as a non-proprietary, vendor-neutral digital hub built on blackned's "Tactical Core" middleware — a bet on the software-defined defense trend, in which sensors, weapon systems and software from different manufacturers can be combined more easily without locking customers into a single supplier. For Rheinmetall, it also signals openness to international partners increasingly favoring open architectures over closed systems.

Political tailwinds persist even as the tape weakens

The broader policy backdrop remains supportive. BDSV President Armin Papperger, who is also Rheinmetall's CEO, on Wednesday backed Foreign Minister Wadephul's position that German tax money for Ukraine should flow primarily into German and European defense systems — artillery ammunition, air defense and satellite reconnaissance among them. The 2027 federal budget, meanwhile, sets defense spending at €139.6 billion, the highest level since the Cold War.

None of that has shielded the shares. Wednesday's close of €1,010.00 marked a 3.8% daily decline, with the 30-day loss reaching 12% and the year-to-date drop at 35% — a sharp reversal from February, when numerous analysts still had buy ratings with price targets partly above €2,000.

Rheinmetall at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The selloff has unfolded against a backdrop of broader European market jitters. The EuroStoxx 50 fell 1.58% on Wednesday, weighed down chiefly by oil prices climbing above $100 a barrel, the highest since July. Rising energy costs and expectations of an ECB rate move on Thursday are pressuring sentiment across sectors, even though defense stocks should fundamentally benefit from elevated military spending.

Sector peers felt the strain as well: RENK, HENSOLDT and TKMS all posted losses during the session after Exane BNP cut its rating on RENK from "Buy" to "Neutral."

What could break the slump

For the share price, much now hinges on whether Rheinmetall can dispel doubts about the margin quality of its growth at November's capital markets day. Until then, market participants see the stock as vulnerable to further setbacks should it decisively break chart support between €950 and €1,000.

Medium-term catalysts are lining up, however: a planned vote on the Arminius contract in December and further defense orders from the Ramstein format could act as drivers once the macroeconomic environment settles.
