Rheinmetall has moved on two fronts in the space of a week, agreeing in principle to take over Alstom's locomotive plant in Kassel while pressing ahead with a satellite manufacturing venture that is running slightly behind its original timetable.

The Düsseldorf-based defence contractor is cast as buyer in the Kassel transaction, with Alstom on the selling side, according to media reports of a Tuesday understanding between the two parties. Neither the financial terms nor a binding contract have been disclosed, leaving the scope of the deal unresolved for now.

The rail site would sit alongside a separate North Hesse project. Rheinmetall Immobilien and Panattoni agreed on Monday to develop a logistics and training centre at the former Kassel-Calden airport. Construction is scheduled to begin on 1 December 2026, with completion targeted for 30 June 2027.

Satellite Production Starts, Later Than Planned

At the Neuss site, the joint venture Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions has begun manufacturing. The plant is designed to turn out several dozen SAR satellites a year and to handle the associated certification work.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Jefferies analyst Chloe Lemarie flagged the start-up of reconnaissance satellite output at Neuss in a Wednesday note that reaffirmed her Buy rating on the stock. She pointed out that the operational rollout has slipped somewhat against the original schedule, though she described the underlying execution of the measures as broadly on track. The assessment echoes a Tuesday call from Deutsche Bank Research's Christoph Laskawi, who kept his Buy recommendation and a price target of EUR 1,800.

The space push extends beyond the factory floor. A satellite developed with Italian partner Argotec rode a SpaceX Falcon 9 into orbit on 1 October, giving concrete shape to Rheinmetall's ambitions in space-based airspace surveillance and situational awareness. A second mission is pencilled in for 2028.

US Army Order and Nordic Footprint

Rheinmetall's defence pipeline produced fresh volume as well. American Rheinmetall Defense secured a U.S. Army contract covering 3,104 improved gun mounts and the modernisation of 245 systems, a package worth roughly EUR 18.05 million.

In parallel, Rheinmetall Nordic opened a new operation in Skoppum, Norway, on 1 October, bundling development, production, system integration and logistics under one roof.

Insider Purchase and a Doubled Credit Facility

Confidence signals arrived from the supervisory board. A mandatory disclosure showed the Sara Georgi Stiftung, closely linked to board member Andreas Arthur Georgi, bought shares on 2 October for a total of EUR 238,706.60.

On the financing side, Rheinmetall renewed its syndicated credit line ahead of schedule and doubled the facility from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. The funds are available for general corporate purposes.

Shares Edge Higher

The stock closed Thursday's session at EUR 939.00, a gain of 1.4% from the previous day, leaving it 4.0% above its 52-week low. Intraday trading during the day had shown an advance of 1.0% to EUR 935.50.

Investors will get a clearer read on the earnings power of these expanded business lines in a few weeks. Rheinmetall is due to publish its third-quarter report on 5 November 2026.
