Rheinmetall's Kassel Drone Hub Takes Shape as the Stock Stumbles Into Autumn

Rheinmetall shares finished Friday's Xetra session at €986.60, a decline of 0.9% on the day, capping a week in which Europe's defense names came under pressure from diplomatic signals and speculation about negotiations in the Ukraine war. The Düsseldorf-based group has now shed 36% since the start of the year, while over the past 30 days alone the stock has given back 14%. Its distance from the 52-week high of €2,007.00, set in early October 2025, has widened considerably.
The retreat marks a sharp reversal for a sector that spent much of the past two years basking in investor enthusiasm. Profit-taking set in on Thursday and carried through to Friday's close, with market participants across European defense reacting nervously to recent diplomatic initiatives, according to media reports. After a long stretch of hefty gains, investors are treating the first hints of possible negotiation steps as a cue to lock in profits.
Analysts Stay on the Sidelines
Research desks have turned cautious as the mood shifts. MWB Research reaffirmed its "Hold" rating on Thursday, while Bernstein Research had already reiterated an "Outperform" call with a €1,900 price target back on September 21, without issuing a fresh assessment. The mixed signals from the brokerages underscore a broader change in how the market is approaching the stock — away from pure demand euphoria and toward a more nuanced read on long-term prospects. European defense budgets remain elevated for the foreseeable future, yet short-term geopolitical hopes are sapping risk appetite in capital markets.
Order Book Meets Delivery Pressure
Demand for defense equipment itself shows no sign of cooling. Rheinmetall last reported an order backlog of roughly €80 billion. What worries the financial community is the industrial side of the equation: whether the company can scale production quickly enough to convert that pipeline into revenue. The concern over delivery capability is weighing on the entire defense industry, not just Rheinmetall. The debate over production capacity in Germany and Europe adds further edge to the issue, even as expectations for reliable deliveries stay high. Attention has gradually migrated from raw order volumes toward execution speed and manufacturing profitability.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?
A Drone Center at Kassel-Calden
Rheinmetall is responding strategically to what modern militaries now require. At Kassel-Calden airport, the group plans a logistics and technology center spanning more than 30,000 square meters, paired with an attached drone testing facility. The project carries an investment volume in the triple-digit millions of euros, with operations targeted to begin by the end of 2027. Through the move, Rheinmetall aims to address the rapidly growing role of unmanned systems in modern warfare, which have proven decisive in current conflicts.
Contract Wins and Research Funding
Operational momentum has continued regardless of the market turbulence. Rheinmetall Naval Systems secured a multi-year framework agreement with the General Customs Directorate on Wednesday, under which the group — through its NVL shipyard group — will handle technical support, maintenance and repair for four new customs vessels powered by liquefied natural gas. Days earlier, Rheinmetall signed a contract with the US Marine Corps to supply twelve autonomous Mission Master SP vehicles.
The group's Pierburg Pump Technology division also notched a research funding success on Tuesday. For its NanoLink development project to produce innovative NanoLam capacitors, the subsidiary secured grant money of around €1.5 million. Planned total investment at the site exceeds €4.4 million, according to company figures.
What the Third Quarter Will Reveal
For shareholders, the next focal point is November 5, 2026, when Rheinmetall publishes its third-quarter results. The report should show how well the company is managing the operational balancing act between a strong intake of orders and swift delivery. Until then, macroeconomic and geopolitical worries look set to keep the broader defense sector in their grip.
