Rheinmetall's Factory Floors Stay Busy Even as the Trading Floor Sours

Rheinmetall shares fell about 38% year-to-date even as the group commissioned a UK vibration rig, advanced simulators and expanded in Québec.

Rheinmetall is quietly stacking up industrial milestones on two continents, yet none of it has been enough to halt a punishing stretch for its share price. The Düsseldorf-based defense group is pushing ahead with specialized manufacturing projects and long-term service contracts, even as its equity sits nearly 38% below where it started the year.

On Tuesday the stock changed hands at EUR 962.70, off 0.9% on the day. A day earlier it had closed at EUR 971.00. Either way, the year-to-date picture is grim: a decline of roughly 37% to 38%, depending on which session you measure from.

Diplomacy Rumors Rattle a Crowded Trade

The immediate trigger for the latest bout of selling was geopolitical rather than operational. According to media reports, speculation about possible negotiations to end the war in Ukraine rippled through European defense names on Thursday, prompting investors to lock in profits after months of gains across the sector. Rheinmetall declined to comment on the broad market moves.

The nervousness is easy to understand. Defense stocks had been among the market's most crowded winners, and any hint of diplomatic progress tends to cool the enthusiasm that military spending headlines had generated. Analysts, though, argue the fundamental case is intact. On Friday, Berenberg reiterated its "Buy" rating and left its price target at EUR 1,600. Analyst Chris Armstrong pointed to sustained fiscal-policy momentum and rising export demand, naming Rheinmetall alongside Renk and OHB as companies positioned to benefit most from expanding government defense budgets.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Not every house is quite so bullish. MWB Research upgraded the stock from "Sell" to "Hold" on September 21 and reaffirmed that stance on Thursday.

A Vibration Rig, a Simulator, and a Stretch of Québec Real Estate

While the market debates geopolitics, Rheinmetall's operating units keep delivering. Rheinmetall UK commissioned a new vibration test facility in Telford on September 17. The rig can handle assemblies weighing up to 40 tonnes and supports work on Britain's Challenger 3 main battle tank. At the same site, Rheinmetall and Mercedes-Benz UK deepened their partnership under the British Land Mobility Programme.

Training solutions are advancing too. A newly designed simulator for the schwerer Waffenträger Infanterie — the infantry heavy weapons carrier — passed its factory acceptance test on September 22. Five of these AGSW systems are slated for delivery to the armed forces by mid-2027.

Across the Atlantic, Rheinmetall Canada kicked off a 7,060-square-meter expansion of its Québec site on September 16, aimed at broadening industrial capabilities for autonomous land systems.

Maritime Maintenance and a Nano-Capacitor Bet

Naval Systems secured a multi-year framework agreement with Germany's Generalzolldirektion on September 23, covering maintenance, repair, and emergency service for four LNG customs vessels. Two days earlier, Rheinmetall had put networked unmanned systems through their paces at NATO's REPMUS26 exercise, supplying the German Navy with a mobile, containerized operations center.

On the manufacturing side, subsidiary Pierburg Pump Technology is receiving roughly EUR 1.5 million in state funding for its NanoLink project. The initiative focuses on process development for producing NanoLam capacitors at the Hartha site in Saxony, where Rheinmetall plans total investments exceeding EUR 4.4 million. The work bolsters the group's in-house development of electronic base components — a reminder that Rheinmetall's ambitions extend well beyond classic large-scale orders into technology-heavy specialty projects and long-term service revenue.
