Rheinmetall broadens naval and unmanned systems via NATO drill REPMUS26, a Quebec expansion, and a U.S. Marine Corps order, while shares trade 50% below their peak.

Rheinmetall is broadening its naval and unmanned portfolio on multiple fronts, even as its share price sits precisely 50% below the record high set in early October of last year. The defence contractor's stock closed Monday at EUR 1,012.00, down from a 52-week peak of EUR 2,007.00 — a level that continues to frame how investors assess the company's growth story.

NATO Exercise Puts Modular Systems to the Test

Through 25 September, Rheinmetall is taking part in the multinational NATO drill REPMUS26 on Portugal's Troia peninsula. The focus is on modular autonomous systems designed to safeguard ports and critical infrastructure. Among the assets being deployed are a containerised mobile command centre for the German Navy, layered underwater sensors, and the company's own Battlesuite for networking the individual components.

That maritime technology base has been expanding steadily. Since April, series production of the Kraken K3 Scout system has been running at the Hamburg site.

From Quebec to the U.S. Marine Corps

The live trial fits into a broader string of recent moves aimed at scaling up the unmanned and networked technology segment. On 16 September, Rheinmetall broke ground in Quebec, Canada, to expand a facility dedicated to manufacturing and development capacity for land-based autonomous systems.

Demand has also been coming from across the Atlantic. On 10 September, American Rheinmetall secured an order from the U.S. Marine Corps via the Defense Logistics Agency and prime contractor ADS Inc. The USD 7.28M contract covers twelve autonomous Mission Master SP A-UGVs, five amphibious marine kits, and supplementary equipment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Classic armaments remain a load-bearing pillar alongside unmanned systems. On 14 September, the group booked an international order for a five-digit number of 155-mm artillery shells in the low triple-digit million-euro range, with production slated for completion by the end of 2027.

Geopolitics and the Baltic Question

Geopolitical security concerns and defence readiness on NATO's eastern flank have dominated recent discussion around Rheinmetall. The research house mwb research placed the situation in the Baltics and the potential consequences of a fresh Russian mobilisation front and centre in its analysis yesterday.

While the analysts consider a direct military confrontation between Russia and NATO unlikely at present, they do not rule the risk out entirely. For the defence group, this environment underscores the continuing need for Western states to modernise their equipment and sensor capabilities.

Quarterly Earnings and a Cautious Market Mood

On the business side, the group benefited from full order books. Earnings per share came in at EUR 2.66, compared with EUR 2.90 in the prior-year quarter. Fresh data on the company's performance is due shortly: third-quarter figures are scheduled for release on 5 November.

Sentiment in the capital markets has nonetheless turned more guarded in recent weeks. On 10 September, JPMorgan reportedly placed the stock on a "Negative Catalyst Watch" while keeping its fundamental rating at "Neutral." Analysts at Bernstein reaffirmed their "Outperform" rating today.

In trading, the shares are showing restraint: the price stands at EUR 1,011.00 today, a modest daily loss of 0.3%.
