Rheinmetall shares climbed 5.4% to EUR 1,090.20 on Friday, riding a broad revival in European defence stocks — yet the German arms maker remains 30% below where it started the year, a gap that says as much about investor doubts over long-term growth as it does about the sector's recent momentum.

The rally had no single company-specific trigger, according to market participants. Instead, two forces converged. Reuters reported that mounting questions over future US military support for Ukraine, together with a Brussels meeting between European leaders and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, pushed the Continent's security architecture back to the top of the agenda. Traders read the geopolitical chatter as a signal that European governments will have to accelerate procurement programmes in the medium term.

Morgan Stanley supplied the second leg. The investment bank flagged the potential for a seasonal sector rally and for funds to be drawn down from existing defence budgets before the year-end, a view that drew buyers back into European defence names after months of correction.

Capacity, Credit and a Lithium Side-Bet

Behind the share-price move, Rheinmetall has been busy expanding its industrial and financial base. Its Spanish subsidiary Rheinmetall Expal Munitions commissioned a new medium-calibre production line at Albacete, a project costing roughly EUR 20 million. The facility is designed for annual output of about three million components — some 1.8 million cartridge cases and 1.2 million projectiles — and its local workforce is set to grow from around 210 to approximately 300.

The group also moved to shore up liquidity for large procurement programmes, renewing its syndicated credit facility ahead of schedule and doubling it from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. Bloomberg reported that Rheinmetall is additionally taking part in a capital increase at Rock Tech Lithium, acting as a strategic co-investor in a converter project in Guben.

International projects are advancing in parallel. Rheinmetall Defence Australia agreed to supply the containerised AERIE air-defence system for countering unmanned aerial vehicles, and demonstrated networked vehicle systems with partners on the Boxer CRV wheeled armoured vehicle. A Bundeswehr joint venture, meanwhile, secured exclusive access to space-based reconnaissance satellites under the SPOCK-1 programme.

Berenberg's Brake on the Bull Case

Not everyone is convinced. Roughly a week ago, Berenberg downgraded Rheinmetall from "Buy" to "Hold" and cut its price target from EUR 1,600 to EUR 1,020, citing uncertainty over medium- and long-term growth and limited visibility on future order intake in the vehicles and weapons-and-ammunition segments. The cautious note stands in contrast to the enthusiasm that greeted Friday's sector-wide advance.

Whether the stock can build on the rebound will depend heavily on incoming orders and the next set of performance figures. Rheinmetall is scheduled to publish its third-quarter report on 5 November 2026, giving investors their first hard look at how the business is actually tracking.
