Rheinmetall shares closed Friday at EUR 1,090.20, up 5.4%, as a broad recovery in European defence stocks lifted the sector. The advance had no single company-specific trigger. According to Reuters, the move was driven by mounting doubts over future U.S. military support for Ukraine and a meeting of European leaders with Volodymyr Zelensky in Brussels, which pushed the debate over Europe's security architecture and strategic autonomy back to the fore. Market participants read the geopolitical chatter as a signal that European buyers will have to accelerate procurement programmes in the medium term.

Morgan Stanley added to the tailwind, suggesting that further orders could be placed from defence budgets toward the end of the year.

Capital buffer and factory floors

Alongside the sector rally, the group is pressing ahead with operational milestones. Rheinmetall prematurely doubled its syndicated credit line to EUR 1.5 billion at the start of October, giving management extra financial room for general corporate purposes. In Spain, subsidiary Rheinmetall Expal Munitions commissioned a medium-calibre production line at its Albacete site, sized for an annual capacity of roughly 1.2 million shells and 1.8 million cartridge cases. Demand for ammunition and defence equipment remains elevated because of the ongoing war in Eastern Europe.

Industrial capabilities are being expanded on other fronts too. Rheinmetall Defence Australia agreed to supply the containerised AERIE air-defence system for countering unmanned aerial vehicles, and demonstrated networked vehicle systems on the Boxer CRV wheeled armoured vehicle together with partners. Through Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions, the Bundeswehr is gaining exclusive access to SAR reconnaissance satellites under the SPOCK-1 programme, while satellite production has started at the Neuss site. American Rheinmetall, for its part, presented modernisation technologies for the U.S. Army at the AUSA trade fair.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

A stock 3.7% above its 50-day line — and 30% down this year

Technically, the picture is mixed. At EUR 1,090.20 the price sits 3.7% above its 50-day moving average of EUR 1,051.64. Yet since the start of the year the stock is still down 30%. Whether it can build on the past few sessions depends heavily on incoming orders and upcoming performance data. As long as the quotation holds above the 50-day line, the recovery remains intact; a sustained slip below it would risk a retest of the annual lows.

The valuation debate itself is split. On 9 October, Bernstein Research's Adrien Rabier reaffirmed an "Outperform" rating with a EUR 1,200 price target, arguing that growth likely stabilised near the level of the annual target after a volatile start to the year. Expected drivers include an order for the Arminius system and the capital markets day scheduled for November. Additional commitments for ammunition and land systems in European budget negotiations could entrench the company's market position, while the U.S. market could add momentum if technologies in combat vehicles, autonomous systems and air defence translate into concrete procurement decisions.

Berenberg took the opposite view. The private bank downgraded the stock from "Buy" to "Hold" on 9 October and cut its price target sharply from EUR 1,600 to EUR 1,020, citing growing uncertainty over medium-term growth and the order situation after 2030.

The question beyond the current cycle

That is the crux for investors: can growth hold up beyond the immediate armament programmes? Short-term procurement initiatives are keeping utilisation high, but institutional investors are increasingly focused on the horizon after 2030. The key issue is how reliably Rheinmetall can convert letters of intent into firm delivery contracts. Market participants want clarity on whether organic growth will suffice to keep margins at the targeted level once the first wave of emergency purchases has been worked through.

The bear case rests on structural fading after the current ramp-up. Should European defence budgets consolidate sooner than expected following the recent increases, a re-rating of the entire sector looms. The aggressive build-out of manufacturing capacity, Albacete included, also carries fixed-cost risk if follow-on orders fall short of optimistic scenarios. Delays in ministerial award procedures or smaller-than-hoped major projects could weigh on the valuation again.

5 November on the calendar

The next concrete catalyst is already set: Rheinmetall publishes its third-quarter 2026 results on 5 November 2026. That date should show whether operating developments support Bernstein's optimistic reading or confirm Berenberg's more cautious outlook. The November capital markets day immediately afterwards is expected to clarify how management intends to secure the growth curve for the coming decade.
