Germany and France confirm the Main Ground Combat System will proceed, as Rheinmetall doubles its credit line to EUR 1.5 billion.

Berlin and Paris have moved to stamp out speculation that Germany could walk away from the joint Main Ground Combat System programme, with Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his French counterpart Catherine Vautrin stating on Friday that the multi-billion-euro tank project will press ahead. For Rheinmetall, the political reassurance matters: alongside KNDS and Thales, the Düsseldorf-based group is one of the industrial cornerstones of what ranks among Europe's most consequential land-systems efforts. A slimmed-down version of the future main battle tank remains on the table, a step that could shorten development cycles without altering the core involvement of the participating contractors. As Handelsblatt and Reuters reported on Friday, the German government firmly rejected portrayals of a national exit.

That clarity on the long-term pipeline arrives as the company strengthens its financial footing. Rheinmetall renewed its syndicated credit facility ahead of schedule and doubled the total volume from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. The new arrangement replaces the previous agreement and, according to the company, is available for general corporate purposes — a broader refinancing base as investment in manufacturing capacity and new technologies ramps up.

Kassel plant, satellites and drone defence widen the industrial base

On the production side, Rheinmetall reached an agreement in principle in early October with rail technology manufacturer Alstom to take over the historic locomotive works in Kassel. According to dpa, the two sides are still negotiating the final contract details. The factory employs roughly 750 people, and acquiring it gives Rheinmetall additional assembly space to work through its well-filled order books in vehicle construction.

New business fields are advancing in parallel. At its Neuss site, the group reported the successful start of series production of satellites. The joint venture Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions also provided the Bundeswehr with direct access to several of its own SAR reconnaissance satellites under the SPOCK-1 programme, which the armed forces can task independently.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Unmanned systems are expanding too. Rheinmetall Defence Australia and Praetorian Aeronautics agreed on delivery of the containerised AERIE counter-drone system, with a demonstration scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. Separately, Rheinmetall and Breaker signed a cooperation agreement to integrate human-machine teaming systems into armoured vehicles.

Shares lag the operational news

The equity has barely reflected any of this. The stock closed Friday at EUR 935.30, down 40% since the start of the year, leaving a market value of EUR 43.63 billion and a 52% discount to its 52-week high of EUR 1,965.00.

Cautious voices on the capital markets added to the muted tone. Analyst George McWhirter of Berenberg downgraded the shares from "Buy" to "Hold" on Friday and cut his price target to EUR 1,020 from EUR 1,600, pointing to uncertainty over medium-term growth prospects and the need for further order intake to sustain expansion beyond 2030.

Investors will get a clearer read on current trading next month. Rheinmetall publishes its third-quarter 2026 results on 5 November 2026, with attention likely to focus on order intake and the order backlog in armoured vehicles.
