Rheinmetall Reaches Orbit as Insiders and Analysts Back the Defense Group's Widening Order Book

Rheinmetall has pushed its defense portfolio beyond the atmosphere. A satellite developed jointly with Italian space firm Argotec was lifted into Earth orbit on Thursday aboard a Falcon 9 rocket operated by SpaceX, marking the Düsseldorf-based group's entry into space-based airspace surveillance and military situational awareness. The systems Rheinmetall is targeting would feed tactical reconnaissance data directly to armed forces.
The orbital launch slots into a broader push to network military platforms. Rheinmetall wrapped up its participation in NATO's REPMUS26 exercise in Portugal only days earlier, testing networked unmanned systems through September 25 to protect maritime infrastructure both above and below the water's surface.
Land Systems Partnerships Advance in Britain
Alongside its space ambitions, the company is deepening cooperation on land platforms. In the UK, Rheinmetall and Mercedes-Benz UK sealed the "Team Wolf" partnership, a platform for the British Army's Land Mobility Programme with Telford serving as the vehicle integration hub. At the same site, Rheinmetall commissioned a new vibration testing facility in mid-September, supporting development work including the Challenger 3 main battle tank.
Munitions capacity is expanding too. A recently reported order from an international customer for several tens of thousands of 155mm artillery shells carries a volume in the low triple-digit million-euro range, with deliveries scheduled for 2027.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?
U.S. Army Order and Customs Contract Add to Backlog
Fresh business continues to flow in despite a demanding geopolitical backdrop. Rheinmetall's U.S. subsidiary booked a U.S. Army contract to produce 3,104 softmount carriages and modernize a further 245 systems, with delivery slated through October 2027. The group also reported a framework agreement with Germany's General Customs Directorate covering technical support and maintenance for four LNG customs vessels.
Insider Buying Signals Confidence After a Rough September
Executives and those close to them have been putting money to work during a volatile stretch. On Friday, the Sara Georgi Stiftung acquired Rheinmetall shares worth a total of EUR 238,706.60; the organization is closely tied to supervisory board member Andreas Arthur Georgi. Days earlier, CEO Armin Theodor Papperger bought shares worth EUR 498,947.80 on September 29.
Such purchases from the top ranks draw particular attention when share prices have come under noticeable pressure, and many investors read them as a bid to signal confidence in the company's medium- and long-term trajectory. Rheinmetall closed Friday's Xetra session at EUR 959.80, giving the group a market value of EUR 44.66 billion. The stock has edged up from its 52-week low set in June, now sitting 6.3% above that mark.
Sentiment across the European defense sector clouded over noticeably in September. According to media reports, speculation about a possible appearance by Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit fueled sector-wide unease, though no direct link to the price declines has been established.
Berenberg Reiterates Buy With EUR 1,600 Target
Analysts, by contrast, remain constructive. On September 25, Berenberg reaffirmed its buy rating on Rheinmetall with a price target of EUR 1,600. Analyst Chris Armstrong anchored his call on fiscal policy momentum and rising defense exports, ranking the stock among his sector favorites.
Attention now turns to next month, when management publishes its third-quarter statement on November 5, 2026. The group's Capital Markets Day in Hamburg follows from November 25 to 27.
