Rheinmetall Rallies 3.5% as Budget Hopes Collide With Berenberg's Downgrade

Rheinmetall shares climbed 3.5% to EUR 1,013.00 on Thursday, lifted by a broader wave of optimism sweeping European defence stocks as the year-end approaches. The advance follows a 2.7% gain the previous day to EUR 979.00, a move attributed largely to the company's newly announced hydrogen partnership with Norway's Nel ASA.
The latest leg up rests on expectations that European governments will accelerate defence budget drawdowns before the calendar turns. A US bank signalled that additional orders from existing defence budgets could materialise in the closing weeks of the year and flagged the possibility of a seasonal rally across the sector. Börsen-Zeitung reported that Rheinmetall and its peers moved higher on that thesis. For Rheinmetall, faster procurement would mean a fuller order book and support for its recent upward drift.
Washington Showcase and a Romanian Shipyard Win
Beyond the trading floor, the Düsseldorf-based group is pressing ahead on several international fronts. On Monday, its US subsidiary American Rheinmetall unveiled new ammunition technologies for the US Army at the AUSA trade fair, including extended-range propellant charges and airburst projectiles. The company's display in Washington spanned combat vehicles, air-defence systems, autonomous platforms and munitions — a broad pitch for market share in the world's largest defence market.
In Romania, a group subsidiary prevailed in a bidding process. According to media reports, insolvency administrator CITR awarded the tender for the Damen Shipyards Mangalia yard to Rheinmetall Real Estate România SRL. The net purchase price came to EUR 138.03 million. The company itself has not confirmed the deal.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?
Hydrogen MoU and a Doubled Credit Line
Away from its military core, management is probing new terrain. Roughly a week ago, Rheinmetall signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Norwegian specialist Nel ASA to explore decentralised production of synthetic fuels from renewable hydrogen. Rheinmetall contributes its Giga-PtX concept and systems integration expertise; Nel brings electrolyser technology. Because the agreement is non-binding and concrete steps are still pending, it offers no reliable near-term earnings contribution.
On the financing side, the group moved early to renew its syndicated credit facility, doubling the volume from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. The step bolsters the liquidity buffer for larger projects and gives management room to scale production capacity quickly. Operational expansion is proceeding in parallel: a new site for subsidiary Rheinmetall Nordic in Skoppum, Norway, and progress on space-based reconnaissance through the SPOCK-1 programme for the Bundeswehr both underscore the build-out.
Berenberg Steps Back as Margins Come Under Scrutiny
Not everyone shares the market's cheer. Roughly a week ago, Berenberg downgraded Rheinmetall from "Buy" to "Hold" and slashed its price target from EUR 1,600 to EUR 1,020, citing mounting uncertainty over medium-term growth prospects. The muted reception given to recent good news has fundamental roots: defence contracts come with long lead times and complex approval procedures. If raw material or integration costs rise faster than revenue, operating margins will feel the squeeze. Should organic new business slow, upside potential would be limited for now.
The stock remains within striking distance of its 52-week low of EUR 902.50, a reminder of how deep the unease runs after months of share-price losses. Investors must weigh whether the recent rebound marks a durable bottom or merely a pause in a broader downtrend. Holding the 52-week low keeps the chance of stabilisation alive; a sustained break above recent interim highs would require fresh, concrete order announcements to dispel analyst scepticism. A slide below EUR 900 would risk renewed technical selling.
Two Dates That Matter
The next operational waypoint is the Futureforces trade fair in Prague from 20 to 23 October, where the group can address European procurement programmes. The real test, however, arrives on 5 November 2026, when Rheinmetall publishes its quarterly figures. Only that report will show whether profitability is keeping pace with the market's lofty expectations — and how much of the hoped-for budget drawdown has already flowed into the company's accounts.
