Rheinmetall Insider Buy Lands as Execution Doubts Keep the Stock Under Pressure

Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger purchased 525 shares for about EUR 499,000 as the defence group's stock has dropped 38% year to date.

Armin Papperger has put his own money where his outlook is. On Tuesday the Rheinmetall chief executive picked up 525 shares in the defence group, a package worth roughly EUR 499,000 — a purchase that lands squarely in the middle of a punishing stretch for the stock.

The shares were changing hands at EUR 960.10 at the time of the transaction, and the year-to-date picture remains grim: Rheinmetall has shed 38% since January. A separate reading earlier in the session had the stock at EUR 962.90, down 0.7% on the day.

A valuation caught between two camps

What is dragging on the equity is less a shortage of orders than a question of conversion. A report in the Stuttgarter Zeitung on Tuesday pointed to a mix of factors behind the persistent weakness at the DAX-listed group: signs of geopolitical de-escalation, and — more importantly — market expectations that have run well ahead of what the company can realistically deliver.

The crux is how quickly, and how profitably, Rheinmetall can turn its record backlog into actual revenue. Analysts have flagged the risks tied to that conversion as a central burden, noting there is little room for slippage in execution and describing consensus forecasts for 2028 as too ambitious.

Not everyone is that cautious. Berenberg reaffirmed its buy rating on Friday and left its price target untouched at EUR 1,600 — leaving a wide gap between the more defensive valuation models and the bulls' case.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Cash flow feels the strain of expansion

The softer sentiment has operational roots as well. Cracks in cash generation were already visible in the second quarter, when deferred customer prepayments and preparations for large-scale capacity expansions weighed on free cash flow.

The top line, by contrast, kept expanding. Rheinmetall posted second-quarter 2026 revenue of EUR 3.289 billion, up 69% year on year, with operating profit of EUR 562 million.

Order intake keeps rolling in

New business has continued to arrive across the group's divisions regardless of the cash-flow squeeze. On 14 September an international customer placed an order for a five-digit quantity of 155-millimetre artillery shells, a contract worth a low three-digit million-euro sum.

Service work is expanding alongside the munitions pipeline. Rheinmetall agreed last Wednesday to maintain four new customs vessels under a multi-year contract, a deal aimed at strengthening its maritime service business. The group is also being linked to a Bundeswehr contract for unmanned systems alongside Helsing.

Elsewhere, the Naval Systems division secured a multi-year framework agreement with the Generalzolldirektion covering maintenance and repair of four LNG customs ships. In Bremen, the company completed the factory acceptance test for a new training device for the schwerer Waffenträger Infanterie, the infantry heavy weapons carrier.

Technological side projects are moving too. Subsidiary Pierburg Pump Technology in Hartha recently received roughly EUR 1.5 million in public funding to develop production processes for NanoLam capacitors, part of an overall investment volume exceeding EUR 4.4 million.

The market wants proof, not announcements

None of this has translated into share-price momentum. Investors are now looking past the steady drip of contract wins and toward hard evidence on margins and backlog conversion — evidence that will arrive with the company's third-quarter 2026 results, scheduled for 5 November.

That is the backdrop against which Papperger's insider purchase should be read: a leadership vote of confidence at a moment when full order books are colliding with near-term profitability and cash-flow hurdles. Whether it is enough to break the downtrend depends largely on how the capacity build-out is executed over the medium term.
