Rheinmetall shares climbed 5.7% to EUR 1,093.60 on Friday, lifted by a broad recovery in European defence names and a fresh operational milestone in Spain. The Düsseldorf-based group formally commissioned a new production line for medium-calibre ammunition at its Albacete site, a move that extends its footprint in a segment where demand from armed forces remains stubbornly high.

Three Million Components a Year Out of Albacete

Rheinmetall sank roughly EUR 20 million into the Spanish facility. The line is built to turn out about 1.2 million rounds annually alongside some 1.8 million cartridge cases, adding up to a combined capacity of around three million components. Staffing will scale up in step: headcount at Albacete is set to rise gradually from around 210 to roughly 300.

The expansion lands against a friendly sector backdrop. According to dpa-AFX, investors rotated back into defence stocks following recent bouts of weakness. Morgan Stanley added support with its view that additional orders from the German defence budget could materialise toward year-end, alongside expectations of a seasonal sector rebound. Media reports pointed to sharp gains among other German defence players as well.

A Split Analyst Scorecard

Opinion on the stock remains far from settled. Berenberg pulled its rating back to "Hold" a good week ago and trimmed its price target to EUR 1,020. RBC took the opposite tack on 9 October, reaffirming "Outperform" with a target of EUR 1,600. Bernstein Research also reiterated its "Outperform" call, with RBC holding its own "Outperform" and EUR 1,600 target on the same day.

The more bearish case centres on uncertainty over revenue growth and order visibility beyond 2030. Berenberg's downgrade from "Buy" to "Hold" — and its steep cut from EUR 1,600 to EUR 1,020 — was explicitly tied to those concerns. The stock has shed 33% since the start of the year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Washington Showcase, No Big Contracts Yet

Rheinmetall's American subsidiary used the AUSA military trade fair to present technology for modernising the US Army, including combat vehicles, ammunition, and uncrewed and air-defence-based systems. American Rheinmetall now employs more than 1,500 people across six US states.

What the fair did not deliver, according to media reports, was any new large-scale order. Should US tenders drag on or go to domestic rivals, the overseas growth narrative could deflate quickly. The market's attention is fixed on the horizon past 2030: while demand for artillery, ammunition and armoured vehicles is locked in for now as Europe replenishes its stocks, the question is whether Rheinmetall can sustain its growth pace once the first wave of European re-equipment is complete. Winning large US programmes and establishing itself in new technology fields will be the deciding factor for its long-term valuation.

Drones, Satellites and a Doubled Credit Line

On the optimistic side, the strategic bets on Anglophone markets and next-generation defence could pay off before long. A broad on-the-ground presence gives American Rheinmetall a running start in upcoming combat vehicle tenders. Additional momentum is expected from pushes into counter-drone and space-based reconnaissance: in Australia, Rheinmetall Defence Australia and Praetorian Aeronautics delivered the prototype of the containerised counter-drone system AERIE, which is due to enter full operator demonstrations in the fourth quarter of 2026. Roughly two weeks ago, the Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions joint venture began manufacturing radar satellites in Neuss, paired with exclusive access for the Bundeswehr.

Funding for all this was secured days earlier. Rheinmetall renewed its syndicated credit facility ahead of schedule and doubled the framework from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion, backed by a broader circle of international partner banks. The facility serves general corporate purposes and underpins the ongoing build-out of production infrastructure.

The Levels That Matter

Traders are watching key markers for direction. As long as the stock holds the EUR 1,020 to EUR 1,030 zone, the path stays open for another run at the resistance levels of recent months. A sustained slide below EUR 1,000 would bring the year's lows back into view as realistic reference points.

Hard numbers arrive in a few weeks. On 5 November 2026, Rheinmetall AG publishes its full third-quarter 2026 results, a report expected to show how the recent expansion steps feed through to the balance sheet — and whether management can back up its post-2030 visibility with new contract wins.
