Rheinmetall has picked up a shipyard on the Black Sea coast, acquiring the industrial and dock infrastructure through insolvency administrator CITR for EUR 138,034,320.47 excluding VAT. The purchase hands the Düsseldorf-based group sizeable manufacturing and dock capacity in southeastern Europe, with room for production, repair and logistics work sitting directly on a strategically important sea route.

The deal is the most concrete sign yet of a company pushing well beyond its core armaments business. Alongside the property purchase, Rheinmetall has taken a stake in Rock Tech Lithium and its German converter, according to Bloomberg, acting as strategic co-investor in the lithium conversion project in Guben, Brandenburg. That secures access to critical precursor materials for mobile storage systems and military applications.

Fuel, finance and a bigger war chest

Hydrogen is the other flank. On 13 October the group signed a non-binding letter of intent with Norwegian hydrogen specialist Nel ASA to study the joint feasibility of decentralised production of synthetic fuels for military sites and critical infrastructure. Nel brings the electrolyser technology; Rheinmetall contributes its Giga-PtX concept and systems integration know-how.

To pay for all of this, Rheinmetall moved early on its banking backstop. On 8 October it renewed its syndicated credit facility ahead of schedule and doubled the volume from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. The new facility replaces the previous agreement and is available for general corporate purposes.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Capacity is expanding on the ground too. Subsidiary Rheinmetall Expal Munitions recently started up a new medium-calibre ammunition line at its Spanish site in Albacete, designed for an annual output of roughly three million medium-calibre components to meet higher demand from European armed forces.

American ambitions

Across the Atlantic, subsidiary American Rheinmetall used the AUSA 2026 defence trade fair on 12 October to present new technologies for the future US Army. The US defence market counts as a strategic pillar of the group's international expansion, and the showcase was aimed at positioning its own system solutions for upcoming US procurement programmes.

The stock has been swept along by the wider security backdrop. Shares closed at EUR 1,090.20 on Friday, a gain of 5.4%, putting them 3.7% above their 50-day average of EUR 1,051.64. The move came after Reuters reported a Ukrainian strike on a Russian refinery following the end of an energy ceasefire, with media reports pointing to investors rotating back into European defence names as the war in Ukraine escalated. At the latest reading the stock trades at EUR 1,085.20, about 3.3% above its 50-day average of EUR 1,050.49 and roughly 45% below its 52-week high of EUR 1,965.00.

Berenberg steps back

Not everyone is chasing the rally. Around two weeks ago Berenberg cut the stock from "Buy" to "Hold" and trimmed its price target to EUR 1,020, citing uncertainty over medium-term growth prospects and pointing to the rising order intake needed to sustain momentum beyond 2030.
