Renk has secured a EUR 30 million follow-on contract from Finnish defence group Patria covering HSWL 076 transmission systems for the TRACKX family of tracked vehicles, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027. The order, announced today, marks a shift from pure trial-phase work toward concrete preparations for later shipments to European armed forces — though it did little to lift the gearbox specialist's share price.

The stock was trading at EUR 36.41, down 3.1%, after the announcement failed to halt selling pressure. That leaves the shares barely above their 52-week low and nursing a decline of roughly 32% since the start of the year. The muted reaction reflects a broader mood swing in the defence sector, where market participants are increasingly debating how far modern drone systems might displace conventional combat vehicles. Renk is positioning itself against that trend with modular, networked components designed to adapt to future vehicle generations.

From prototypes to production planning

Patria had already placed an initial pre-series order with Renk in early 2026. The two partners did not disclose how many gearboxes the new call-off covers. The timing of the fresh commitment suggests Patria is pushing ahead with the TRACKX timetable rather than waiting for the outcome of troop trials.

That programme took shape at the end of September, when Finland and Sweden signed their first contracts for the TRACKX platform. Sweden ordered five units for testing, while Finland's initial package carries a volume of EUR 13 million. The participating nations are modernising their mobility under demanding climatic conditions; Finland and Sweden sealed a cooperation on Arctic mobility in June, and Norway and Latvia followed in July with an agreement on closer collaboration in testing and possible joint procurement. Field trials with the Finnish Army's Kainuu Brigade are planned for autumn 2027, and Patria is targeting the start of regular series production in 2027 or 2028.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

The effort is embedded in wider European defence projects as well. The EU approved additional funding this spring for the FAMOUS 3 initiative, which supports the development of modern tracked vehicles. The partner countries are coordinating their trials closely in order to establish standardised vehicle platforms for future requirements.

A gearbox built for a new class of vehicle

The HSWL 076 serves light tracked vehicles in the 10- to 20-tonne weight class. Weighing around 700 kilograms, the unit combines steering, braking and drive functions in a single compact assembly. An integrated digital control system broadens the technology's operational envelope, enabling platoon-style formations, full remote control of platforms and future autonomous driving profiles. Renk and Patria deepened their cooperation over the summer, presenting an unmanned vehicle concept based on the TRACKX architecture at the Eurosatory trade fair in June 2026.

For Renk, the significance of such projects rarely lies in the volume of the initial order. What matters more is industrial anchoring as the exclusive system supplier in the drivetrain. Should Patria place meaningful unit numbers with European customers, the gearbox maker stands to collect long-term revenue across the entire life cycle of the vehicle fleets.

Scale still to be proven

Confirmed order volumes remain modest so far. Sweden's five pre-series vehicles are for testing, and Finland's exact purchase quantity has yet to be determined. In the optimistic scenario, the Swedish trial phase paves the way for swift procurement by further armed forces, and demand for transmissions could multiply quickly if testing proceeds to plan. Light, highly mobile tracked vehicles are gaining importance in European armies' modernisation plans, and additional demand from further partner states could keep production lines busy for years. For investors, that would mean a marked improvement in visibility, since follow-on contracts for spare parts and maintenance are automatically tied to the installed gearbox system.

Against that stands the risk of delays in military procurement. The segment suffers from high expectations that lengthy bureaucratic processes repeatedly temper. If the upcoming tests of the Swedish pre-series vehicles require technical rework, the start of series production could slip further. A single follow-on order worth EUR 30 million is nowhere near enough to offset weaker developments in other business areas, and there is a danger that Finland sizes its procurement smaller than hoped. Should later series manufacturing fall short of expectations, the positive effect of the current order would quickly dissipate.

What to watch next

As long as support near the previous annual low holds, the operational order situation offers a solid basis for the share price to settle. If the market environment deteriorates further and the Nordic armed forces delay their decisions, a slide to new lows becomes a real threat. The next directional catalysts are progress in the Swedish test vehicle trials and concrete disclosure of Finland's batch sizes. Only when Patria pins down the exact series production schedule will investors gain the clarity they need on the project's actual earnings power.
