Renk's Naval Ambitions Face a Market That's Yet to Be Won Over

The Augsburg-based defence supplier is navigating a curious disconnect. Its order books are swelling, its strategic ambitions are expanding into warship propulsion, and institutional investors keep adjusting their positions — yet the share price tells a far more cautious story.
Shares in the tank gearbox and drivetrain specialist closed Friday at €47.67, down 1.0 percent on the day. That leaves the stock roughly 47 percent below its 52-week high of €90.20, reached on 6 October, and nursing a 21 percent decline over the past twelve months. Year-to-date, the loss stands at 12 percent.
A Record Quarter Buried in the Noise
The market's coolness is striking given the operational momentum. Renk booked around €1.2 billion in orders during the first half of 2026, a 29.7 percent jump year-on-year. The second quarter alone delivered €612.8 million in new business — the strongest quarterly intake in the company's history. Adjusted EBIT rose 10.1 percent to €98.2 million, with the margin improving to 15.4 percent.
For the full year, management has held its guidance: revenue above €1.5 billion and adjusted EBIT in a range of €255 million to €285 million.
The second-quarter numbers, published in early August, showed revenue up 1.74 percent to €353.59 million. Earnings per share, however, slipped to €0.15 from €0.30 a year earlier — a reminder that top-line growth has yet to translate into bottom-line gains. The next test comes on 5 November, when third-quarter results are due.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?
Charting a Course Into Naval Waters
The strategic centrepiece is the planned acquisition of David Brown Defence. The deal, still subject to regulatory approvals and expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, would give Renk access to major naval programmes — most notably the Global Combat Ship project, which covers up to 34 vessels for Canada, Britain, Australia and Norway.
The timing makes sense. The Marine & Industry segment posted a mixed first half, with order intake down 9.9 percent to €164.4 million. But the second quarter brought strong double-digit growth there, driven by significant contracts from international frigate programmes. The David Brown acquisition should reinforce that trajectory.
On the land side, demand remains solid. Renk has picked up initial series orders for drivetrains for the Patria TRACKX armoured tracked vehicle, underscoring the company's diversification across platforms and customer countries.
Institutional Investors Shift Positions
Alongside the corporate developments, two regulatory filings have drawn attention. BlackRock trimmed its combined position in Renk — comprising voting rights and financial instruments — to 4.06 percent as of 25 August, from 4.07 percent previously. Within that, directly held voting rights fell to 1.72 percent, while the stake held via instruments rose to 2.34 percent. The disclosure was made public on Friday via GlobeNewswire and Deutsche Börse.
Wellington Management Group also filed a voting rights notification under § 40 WpHG, reporting through its subsidiary Wellington Management Singapore Pte Ltd. The filing did not specify the exact size of the holding.
Neither move signals a dramatic shift in sentiment. But the filings, coming in a period when the defence sector is consolidating and Renk is widely viewed as a potential beneficiary, underscore that institutional attention remains firmly fixed on the company.
Waiting for the Market to Catch Up
The puzzle for investors is the gap between the fundamental picture and the share price. The record order intake briefly lifted the stock, but those gains have since faded. Analyst endorsements from roughly two weeks ago did little to stem the drift.
What the market seems to want is evidence that the order momentum will eventually show up in profitability. The David Brown deal, when it closes, will be the next concrete milestone — a test of whether Renk can genuinely expand its position in international naval programmes and, perhaps, persuade the market to re-rate the stock accordingly.
