The defense supplier's shares have spent much of the past year trading well below their October peak, yet the fundamentals keep telling a different story. On Friday, the market appeared to listen, with the stock closing up 2.8 percent at €51.79 — a move that coincided with Barclays Capital initiating coverage with an "Overweight" rating and a €60 price target.

That bullish call from analyst Afonso Osorio, who flags Renk as the world's leading supplier of gearboxes for military tracked vehicles used by more than 70 armed forces, landed just days after the company's half-year report gave investors multiple reasons to reassess the equity.

The Numbers Behind the Optimism

The figures Renk published on August 6 painted a picture of accelerating momentum. Order intake for the first half reached roughly €1.2 billion, pushing the total backlog to an all-time high of €7.4 billion and producing a book-to-bill ratio of 1.9. Adjusted EBIT grew 10.1 percent — outpacing revenue — and the adjusted margin climbed to 15.4 percent.

The standout performer was the Vehicle Mobility Solutions division, where order intake surged 42.6 percent to €970 million and adjusted margins hit 19.2 percent. At group level, margins expanded by 120 basis points, driven partly by scale effects and a new modular assembly concept in the vehicle mobility unit that alone contributed a 210-basis-point improvement year on year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

Revenue came in at €637.2 million with adjusted EBIT of €98.2 million, matching analyst expectations. Management subsequently reaffirmed its full-year guidance: revenue above €1.5 billion and adjusted EBIT in the €255 million to €285 million range.

A Strategic Pivot Beyond Land Vehicles

The operational strength has been complemented by a strategic acquisition that broadens Renk's addressable market. In early July, the company agreed to buy UK gearbox manufacturer David Brown Defence from Stellex Capital Management, a deal Bloomberg valued at between $200 million and $250 million.

David Brown Defence specializes in precision gearboxes for naval and land defense forces, giving Renk entry into marine projects and long-term order books in Britain, Canada and Australia — a meaningful step beyond its traditional land-vehicle focus. The transaction is expected to close by year-end.

The acquisition also dovetails with a refinancing that has improved the company's financial flexibility. A new unsecured syndicated credit facility cuts annual financing costs by around €7 million, while free cash flow in the first half jumped to roughly €42 million from €11.5 million in the prior-year period — a development CFO Anja Mänz-Siebje describes as a solid foundation for growth plans.

The Caveats That Keep the Share Price in Check

For all the positive signals, the stock remains roughly 43 percent below its October 2025 record high of €90.20, hovering near its 200-day average of €52.64. Deutsche Bank Research, which reaffirmed its "Buy" rating on Friday, argues the half-year report has strengthened investor confidence in the annual targets.

Renk Group at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

One overhang persists: CEO Alexander Sagel no longer expects the Boxer large-scale order known as Arminius to land at Renk in 2026. Parliamentary approval could drag into December, pushing the contract into next year. Management nevertheless sticks to its order intake target of around €2 billion for 2026, aiming to offset any shortfall from Arminius and the F127 program through the F128 program and additional international land business.

The December parliamentary decision on Arminius will serve as a key test of whether those replacement orders materialize in the planned magnitude. Until then, investors have the third-quarter results on November 5 to gauge whether the margin improvements hold and how the David Brown Defence integration is progressing.
