Renk's Chart Is the Final Arbiter in a Battle Between Record Orders and Lingering Skepticism

Renk posts record orders and backlog, but sliding bearings weakness and share price below key level split investor sentiment on defence outlook.

The Augsburg-based gearbox specialist has become something of a Rorschach test for European defence sentiment. On paper, the numbers tell a story of unqualified success — a record order book, a historic quarter, and a strategic pivot toward the maritime sector. On the screen, however, the share price remains stubbornly tethered below a key technical level, leaving investors to decide whether the market is being overly cautious or simply realistic.

The Numbers That Should Move the Needle

Renk's half-year results, published on 6 August, delivered what most companies would consider a blowout performance. Order intake surged to roughly €1.2 billion, a 29.7 percent increase year-on-year. The second quarter alone accounted for €612.8 million in new orders — the strongest single quarter in the company's history. The book-to-bill ratio hit 1.9 times, while the total order backlog reached an all-time high of €7.4 billion, providing multi-year planning security.

Revenue growth was more measured, rising 2.7 percent to €637.2 million in the first half. Management attributed this to planned timing, though the earnings call hinted at delays on certain German contracts. The adjusted EBIT margin improved from 14.4 to 15.4 percent, suggesting the company is converting its swelling order book into profitability more efficiently than before.

The full-year guidance remains intact: more than €1.5 billion in revenue and adjusted EBIT between €255 million and €285 million. CEO Sagel has indicated he expects to land in the upper half of that range.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

The Bearings Segment Tells a Different Story

Not every division is firing on all cylinders. The sliding bearings segment, which ties Renk to the broader industrial cycle rather than pure defence spending, showed visible strain. Order intake there fell 3.2 percent to €64.2 million in the first half, revenue dropped 4.4 percent to €59.9 million, and adjusted EBIT slid from €10.4 million to €7.5 million. Higher US tariffs and weak industrial markets are taking their toll — a reminder that Renk is not a pure defence play, despite its reputation as a bellwether for European rearmament.

A Quiet Period of Structural Change

Behind the headline numbers, Renk has been reshaping its balance sheet and portfolio. In late July, the company completed a €1.05 billion refinancing, replacing its existing syndicated loans entirely. The package comprises a €450 million term loan, a €225 million revolving credit facility, and a €375 million guarantee line, all with five-year tenors and two extension options. Notably, the previous collateral structure has been dropped, giving management greater operational freedom.

Around the same time, Renk signed a binding agreement to acquire David Brown Defence, a British specialist in precision gears for naval and land defence applications with roughly 530 employees. The acquisition, which strengthens Renk's maritime positioning, is expected to close in the fourth quarter. The Canada submarine programme — for which partner ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) was selected as preferred bidder for twelve 212CD-class submarines — adds another layer of long-term visibility. Reports value the full programme at up to US$70 billion over a 50-year lifecycle, with the construction contract alone estimated at around €20 billion. Renk will supply the propulsion systems.

The Technical Picture: A Bottleneck at €53

For all the operational strength, the chart remains the sticking point. The 200-day moving average sits at €53.01, with the current price roughly four percent below it. A daily close above this level would signal a fresh uptrend; failure could trigger renewed selling. The stock has already recovered more than 25 percent from its 52-week low of €40.41, and a rejection at the 200-day line would put that progress in jeopardy.

The near-term technicals offer some encouragement. The stock trades above its 50-day average of €46.75, and the RSI of 64.6 indicates strength without being overbought. Over the past 30 days, the share has gained nearly ten percent. Since the earnings release and a move back above the €50 mark, the stock advanced 5.98 percent within seven days — though Friday's close of €50.77 saw a modest 1.01 percent decline.

The longer-term picture remains challenging. The stock still sits roughly 21 percent lower on a twelve-month view and remains more than 40 percent below its 52-week high of €90.20, reached in early October 2025. The annualised 30-day volatility exceeds 40 percent, underscoring how quickly sentiment can shift.

What the Street Is Saying

Analysts remain constructive. JPMorgan reaffirmed its "Overweight" rating with a €75 price target following the results, while Jefferies maintained "Buy" with a €60 target — both implying meaningful upside from current levels. The optimism is tempered, however, by the market's recent disappointment around NATO spending expectations and sector downgrades, which may explain why even stellar operational numbers have failed to fully re-rate the stock.

The next catalyst arrives on Wednesday, 12 August, when TKMS reports quarterly results. Any additional detail on the Canadian submarine contract could indirectly influence expectations for Renk. Should the stock close above the 200-day line at €53.01, the path toward a broader recovery opens up. A failure, by contrast, could send the share back toward the 100-day average at €49.21.

The fundamental story is compelling — the question is whether the chart will finally agree.
