Renk signed a EUR 130M KNDS contract for Leopard 2 gearboxes through 2032, plus a EUR 30M Patria order, but shares fell 2.2%.

A fresh contract extension worth roughly EUR 130 million will keep Renk Group's Augsburg transmission lines busy well into the next decade, yet the stock market greeted the news with little enthusiasm — a disconnect that neatly captures the tug-of-war now defining the German defense supplier's investment case.

KNDS deal covers HSWL-354 gearboxes through 2032

Signed at the AUSA industry fair in Washington, the agreement with KNDS Deutschland covers HSWL-354 transmissions, TCS-354A control units and G4MA11 gear selector switches for vehicles in the Leopard 2 family. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2029 and run through 2032. Neither party disclosed unit volumes or end customers.

The contract rests on an installed base that is unusually broad: according to KNDS, roughly 3,300 Leopard 2 tanks and associated family vehicles are in service with armed forces across 23 countries. That footprint underpins years of recurring demand for components and modernization work, and it cements Renk's role as a system partner for heavy tracked vehicles, with its gearbox technology effectively a standard across numerous international militaries.

Augsburg's production history with the HSWL-354 line stretches back decades. Assembly of the 4,000th unit of the series began at the site in June 2026, and the latest order slots neatly into that manufacturing lineage, giving the relevant plant areas a predictable workload beyond the current decade.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

Long lead times cut both ways

For a defense supplier, such agreements deliver meaningful planning certainty. Military procurement cycles are long, demanding resilient supply chains and forward-looking capacity management. The flip side is that revenue recognition sits far in the future, leaving the operating business dependent for now on orders already being called off. Investors are weighing precisely that gap between a well-filled order book and the timing mismatch on cash generation.

Patria follow-on adds EUR 30 million

On the operational front, Renk also secured a follow-up order from Patria for HSWL 076 gearboxes for the TRACKX vehicle family. That contract carries a volume of EUR 30 million, with deliveries set to start in 2027.

Shares retreat with the broader sector

The stock came under noticeable pressure on Tuesday, sliding 2.2% to close at EUR 33.98 amid a broad-based pullback in European defense names. No company-specific news drove the decline; the weakness reflected deteriorating sentiment across the entire sector. After the strong gains of the past, valuation pressure has been building on defense stocks, with market participants increasingly questioning whether ambitious earnings expectations are still fully justified at current price levels.

That mood is echoed in a call from Bank of America analyst David Holmes, who dropped his buy rating on Renk in early October. His reasoning: the current level of gearbox production is unlikely to be sustainable, and the company leans heavily on cyclical modernization work and inventory replenishment.

At a share price of EUR 34.59, Renk's market capitalization stands at EUR 3.40 billion — a level that leaves the stock just 3.3% above its 52-week low.

November print in focus

Clarity on how the business is holding up against growing sector skepticism should arrive with the upcoming financial calendar. Renk has scheduled a pre-close call on nine-month figures for October 21, followed by the official publication of its third-quarter statement for the first nine months of 2026, including a conference call, on November 5. Those numbers will offer the first real test of whether the operational story can withstand the doubt now swirling around the sector.
