Renk Balances a 2029 Gearbox Backlog Against Near-Term Analyst Caution
Published on 10/23/2026 at 15:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deRenk's order book and its near-term earnings trajectory are telling two different stories, and investors are being asked to weigh both at once. A fresh contract win has extended the company's visibility well into the next decade, yet two major banks trimmed their price targets this week — a pairing that says less about contradiction than about timing.
The stock posted a daily move of -3.2%, though no single company announcement can be tied directly to that swing.
A Gearbox Order That Pays Off Later
On 14 October, Renk and KNDS Deutschland agreed to expand an order worth roughly EUR 130 million. The package covers HSWL-354 transmissions and associated control electronics for the LEOPARD 2 and its vehicle family.
What matters for valuation is not the headline value but the delivery window. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2029 and wrap up in 2032. That gives Renk a durable revenue runway, but it does nothing to answer the nearer-term questions about how quickly the business is actually ramping. A signed contract and its operational execution are separate steps — which is precisely why upbeat order news and more cautious analyst models can coexist without either being wrong.
Two Banks Cut Targets, Neither Abandons Ship
The recent analyst moves speak directly to that execution question. JPMorgan lowered its price target on Wednesday to EUR 50 from EUR 62 while reaffirming its "Overweight" rating. Analyst David H. Perry pointed to a slower ramp in German armoured-vehicle programmes and a dimmer outlook for Renk's industrial businesses — directing attention both at the pace of vehicle programmes and at what happens outside that segment.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?
Barclays followed a day earlier, cutting its target to EUR 57 from EUR 60 and likewise keeping "Overweight." The takeaway for shareholders is the combination: both houses pulled in their marks without surrendering their constructive stance. That signals tempered expectations inside a still-positive rating — neither an unchanged view nor a wholesale retreat from the stock.
Guidance Restated on a Smaller Base
Layered on top is the annual forecast Renk issued yesterday, tied to the agreed sale of its plain bearings business to Miba. For continuing operations, the company projects around EUR 1.4 billion in revenue for 2026 and adjusted EBIT of between EUR 240 million and EUR 255 million.
Media reports characterised the market's read as a slight downgrade. The strategic repositioning and the earnings expectations therefore need to be assessed on separate tracks. Previously, Renk had guided to revenue above EUR 1.5 billion, with adjusted operating profit at the upper end of a EUR 255 million to EUR 285 million range. Anyone comparing the new figures with the old ones has to account for the shrunken perimeter of the group.
Orders and Margins as the Counterweight
Against that smaller base, Platow reported yesterday that Renk now expects stronger order intake than previously forecast, alongside continued margin improvement. That is an expectation rather than a book of confirmed orders, but it adds a meaningful operational data point to the strategic realignment: the company anticipates more bookings than it had assumed, even as profitability keeps grinding higher.
Both developments matter for framing the revised annual targets. A lower absolute profit following a divestment does not, on its own, answer the question of earnings quality in what remains. That requires looking separately at business momentum and profitability. The bearings unit had been contributing roughly 9% of group revenue, so its disposal shifts more weight onto the defence business inside the group.
The Financial Side of the Miba Deal
Beyond operations, the sale carries a balance-sheet dimension. Renk said the purchase price sits in the low-to-mid three-digit million euro range. Miba described the acquisition as the largest in its corporate history.
The transferred business spans five manufacturing sites worldwide and 500 employees — a standalone industrial unit rather than a collection of individual assets.
Two layers thus sit side by side for anyone valuing Renk: the changed size of the group and the trajectory of its remaining activities. The stronger order expectation and ongoing margin gains argue against judging the defence focus solely on lower absolute annual targets. They do not, however, substitute for the still-pending work of converting those expectations into actual results.
