QuantumScape's AI Data-Center Story Runs Into Two Lower Price Targets
Published on 10/17/2026 at 17:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deQuantumScape shares fell 5.3% on Wednesday, caught in a broad technology selloff that had little to do with the company itself. But the retreat also coincided with a pair of price-target cuts from Wall Street analysts, and that combination is what makes the stock worth a closer look.
AP reported that US technology stocks fell broadly as investors fretted over the sustainability of AI-related spending and rising bond yields. The news agency did not draw any direct link between those pressures and QuantumScape's decline. The distinction matters: the sector backdrop supplies the setting, not the proof.
A Reference Design, Not a Revenue Line
QuantumScape tied itself explicitly to the AI data-center theme about a week ago with the unveiling of QS PowerBlock, a reference design for an energy storage system built to sit inside a server rack. According to the company, the concept delivers four times the power density and five times the runtime of current industry standards — figures based on prototype testing and modeled configurations.
That is a technical claim with clearly defined limits. It does not translate directly into an economic assessment, and the gap between an intriguing product prospect and firm expectations for the business is exactly where investors need to draw the line. A large future market does not answer the valuation question on its own.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying QuantumScape?
Two Houses, One Direction
The analyst moves point the same way. Morgan Stanley's Andrew Percoco cut his price target to $5 from $9 on Thursday, according to media reports, while keeping his Equal-Weight rating. The combination stands out: Percoco slashed the target sharply without touching his overall stance. No rationale for the reduction can be inferred from the rating alone, and it would be just as sloppy to equate the cut with the broader tech selloff.
Evercore's Chris McNally had already lowered his target to $7 from $10 on Monday, maintaining an In-Line rating. So the lower marks did not come from a single shop. Both firms trimmed their targets without changing their calls — a combination that argues against the idea that the prior valuation level was comfortably protected, even if it amounts to neither a fresh sell recommendation nor evidence of operational failure.
What the October Date Must Deliver
QuantumScape has scheduled its third-quarter 2026 results for release after the market close on October 21, with a webcast and conference call to follow. That date offers the next concrete occasion to test expectations against actual business performance.
QuantumScape at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
For my money, a further attention-grabbing headline matters less than a credible economic framing of the outlook. The weak tech sector explains the environment; the lowered targets show that investors should not bracket out the company-specific valuation.
On balance, caution wins. PowerBlock offers a perspective, but not yet a sufficient reason to dismiss the recent re-rating as mere market noise. The key question is how convincingly QuantumScape can connect technical performance to commercial progress — the AI label is a connection, not an answer to the valuation question.
