Plug Power Trims Its Burn to a Record Low, but a Thin $134 Million Cushion Keeps Investors Wary
Published on 10/17/2026 at 08:01 | Editorial boerse-global.dePlug Power delivered the kind of quarter many shareholders had been waiting for: cash consumption slowed sharply and revenue growth returned to double digits. The market's verdict was swift and unkind. The stock fell 6.3% in German trading on Friday to EUR 1.24, a level that leaves it just 2.5% above its 52-week low of EUR 1.21, touched during the same session.
That gap between operational progress and share-price reaction is the story. Preliminary, unaudited figures for the third quarter show a net cash burn of roughly $28 million — a record low for the company. What makes the number stand out is how it was achieved: without tapping equity sales through existing at-the-market programs or any other external capital raise during the quarter.
Revenue Growth and a Rebuilt Pipeline
The top line moved in the right direction as well. Third-quarter revenue rose more than 10% year over year, and management reaffirmed guidance of 15% to 16% revenue growth for the full year 2026. Gross margin is also expected to improve versus the prior-year period, extending a recovery already seen in the two preceding quarters.
The project pipeline is filling up. Electrolyzer orders include 280 megawatts for Arcadia eFuels and 50 megawatts for Orica following that company's final investment decision. A cooperation in sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) adds potential exceeding one gigawatt.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?
The Arithmetic Behind the Skepticism
So why the selling? The answer sits in the balance sheet. Plug Power ended the third quarter with about $134 million in unrestricted cash and cash equivalents, excluding restricted funds. Even at the reduced burn rate of $28 million per quarter, that cushion is thin.
Any project delay or unexpected cost would make another capital raise all but inevitable — and with it the dilution that existing shareholders have feared for months. The market's caution is not irrational. It reflects the hard experience that an ambitious project pipeline worth roughly $8 billion stays worthless until it converts into profitable cash flows. Analysts still expect a loss of $0.418 per share for full-year 2026. Until operations generate real money, every reduction in cash burn merely buys time.
Analysts Trim Targets as an Insider Files to Sell
The backdrop remains difficult. Research houses cut their price targets, with Morgan Stanley citing muted long-term expectations for the commercial rollout of hydrogen technology and headwinds from a higher interest rate environment. Susquehanna also lowered its target.
Separately, the company filed a Form 144 notice with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission disclosing that Benjamin Haycraft intends to sell 9,375 common shares under an existing trading plan. The filing documents the intent to sell and does not confirm a completed transaction.
Two Dates That Matter
Attention now shifts to the corporate calendar. Plug Power will publish full third-quarter 2026 results after the U.S. market close on November 9, 2026, with a conference call scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET. Ten days later, on November 19, 2026, management has scheduled its annual Global Plug Symposium, where investors hope for concrete insight into the company's technological roadmap and future market positioning.
The detailed quarterly report must show that the margin improvement is durable and that an operational turnaround can succeed without fresh capital measures. Technically, the stock looks deeply oversold, but fundamental concerns carry more weight than short-term indicators. One quarter of slower cash burn is not enough to reverse the prevailing mood at the trading desks.
