Plug Power Stops Raising Cash Just as the Market Stops Paying Up

Plug Power's stock ended Friday at EUR 1.24, down 6.3% on the session and hovering barely above its 52-week low of EUR 1.21. The trigger had nothing to do with the company itself: a broad sell-off swept the US tech sector as investors fretted over the durability of the massive spending on artificial intelligence, according to a report from the AP news agency. The hydrogen specialist was simply caught in the downdraft, with no company-specific news on the day.

That indiscriminate hit lands on a business whose management is, for once, trying to run leaner. Preliminary, unaudited figures for the third quarter of 2026 point to revenue growth of more than 10% year on year, and Plug Power has reaffirmed its full-year 2026 target of roughly 15% to 16% growth. Gross margin is also expected to improve from a year earlier.

The Cash Story Is the One That Matters

Top-line progress is necessary but hardly sufficient to win back investors who have spent years watching promises outrun results. The question that really decides the fate of the business model is whether management can get its cash burn under control — repeated heavy outflows had cast doubt on the company's financial staying power.

On that front, the quarter brought tangible relief. Net cash used in the third quarter came to about $28 million, and cash and cash equivalents stood at roughly $134 million at period-end, adjusted for restricted cash. The standout detail: Plug Power raised no fresh money at all during the quarter — not through its ATM program, not through other equity issuance, and not through debt. Existing shareholders were spared further dilution, at least for now.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

That restraint is a long-overdue signal, showing management intends to fight through a difficult environment under its own steam. Yet the market's verdict is clear enough: thrift alone does not dispel broader anxieties.

Two Brokers Trim, and the Hydrogen Rollout Is the Reason

On October 14, two research houses cut their price targets. Morgan Stanley lowered its to $1.20 while keeping an Underweight rating, citing muted long-term growth expectations for the global adoption of hydrogen technology. Susquehanna reduced its target to $1.75 and maintained a Neutral stance.

Those calls land on the sore spot. Even if Plug Power gets better at controlling its own costs, it remains hostage to the pace of the global energy transition. As long as large industrial orders are handed out hesitantly, growth momentum risks flattening out over the medium term.

A Danish Order and a November Reckoning

That makes it all the more important that strategic partnerships turn into hard revenue. A little over three weeks ago, Plug Power signed a supply agreement for 280 MW of GenEco electrolysers with Arcadia eFuels for Denmark's ENDOR project, flanked by a collaboration covering more than 1 GW for potential e-SAF projects. Deliveries, however, will not begin until the project consortium gives its formal go-ahead.

The full third-quarter results, due at a conference call on November 9, 2026, will be the real stress test. Management must show that the reduction in cash outflows was not a one-off. Until then, the share price is likely to stay tethered to the wider sector mood — and with the stock within a whisker of its 52-week low, the chart offers little comfort.

All told, the equity remains a speculative bet. The upside only outweighs the risk once improved financial discipline shows up in the balance sheet quarter after quarter. The pause in capital raising is a step in the right direction; rebuilding trust on Wall Street will take considerably more patience.
