Plug Power's Thrift Wins Plaudits, Not Buyers, as Two Brokers Slash Targets
Published on 10/18/2026 at 15:02 | Editorial boerse-global.dePlug Power spent years being valued on promises. Last Friday the market delivered its verdict on that currency: it no longer spends. The hydrogen specialist's shares fell 6.3% in European trading to close at EUR 1.24, a slide that leaves the stock within a whisker of its 52-week low of EUR 1.21 and, by extension, with almost no room left for further disappointment.
The retreat came against a soft broader tape, but the outsized reaction says more about Plug Power's own predicament than about the market's mood. Investors who once treated every memorandum and megawatt announcement as the harbinger of an industrial revolution have turned cold, and they are demanding hard evidence of a route to operating profitability rather than further declarations of intent.
A quarter of restraint
The preliminary, unaudited figures for the third quarter offer the first genuine counter-argument. Net cash burn came to roughly $28 million, and the company ended the period with about $134 million in liquid funds, adjusted for restricted cash. Just as tellingly, Plug Power raised no fresh equity or debt through its ATM programme during the quarter — a notable abstention for a company whose capital hunger has been a standing complaint among shareholders.
Management also guided toward revenue growth of more than 10% year on year for the quarter, and left its full-year 2026 target of 15% to 16% growth intact. The reduced outflow buys the board a measure of breathing space and suggests the cost measures and the shift toward capital efficiency are biting. It does not, however, leave much slack if projects slip.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?
Wall Street trims its ambitions
The analyst community was unmoved. On Wednesday, Morgan Stanley cut its price target to $1.20 from $1.65 while keeping an Underweight rating, citing explicitly its tempered expectations for the pace of global hydrogen adoption. Susquehanna followed the same day, taking its target down to $1.75 from $2.50.
Their caution reflects an industry-wide bind rather than anything specific to Plug Power. Demand for clean hydrogen is growing far more slowly than the euphoric forecasts of recent years suggested. Industrial buyers are hesitating before committing to final investment decisions, with high interest rates and unclear regulatory frameworks pushing project costs higher. Even genuine technological milestones now land with a thud on the trading floor.
An order book that needs to become cash
The commercial pipeline, at least, is not empty. Three weeks ago Plug Power agreed to supply 280 megawatts of GenEco electrolysers to Arcadia eFuels for the ENDOR project in Denmark, a partnership that could eventually exceed one gigawatt across future fuel projects. A 50 MW order from Orica and planning work on Hy2gen's Courant project round out the recent wins.
Those agreements demonstrate that customers remain interested in the technology. What matters for shareholders now is how quickly they convert into actual cash inflows — a well-stocked order book counts for little without reliable execution.
Two dates in November
The calendar will force the issue. Plug Power reports full third-quarter results on 9 November 2026, and ten days later, on 19 November 2026, it hosts its annual Plug Symposium. At those events, invoking revenue growth will not be enough. Management must show that cost reductions are durable and that the path to positive operating figures can be walked without a steady drip of capital increases — and, at the symposium, set out in detail how long-term financing will be secured without further diluting existing shareholders.
The combination of a slower cash burn and a growing backlog points toward gradual stabilisation. The drag from the interest-rate environment and broader market uncertainty remains palpable, though, and the stock's disproportionate sensitivity to any gloomy session is a reminder of how deep scepticism runs. For those already invested, the November presentations should settle whether Friday's slide was an overreaction or a fair reflection of investor doubt.
