Plug Power's Thin Cash Cushion Faces Two November Tests as Wall Street Cuts Its Targets
Published on 10/18/2026 at 09:50 | Editorial boerse-global.dePlug Power closed Friday at EUR 1.24, down 6.3%, leaving the hydrogen specialist within a hair of its 52-week low of EUR 1.21. The slide came amid a broadly weak market, but the pressure on the stock runs deeper than one bad session — it reflects the awkward gap between hydrogen's long-term promise and the near-term economics of building an industry from scratch.
The company's preliminary, unaudited third-quarter figures offer a rare piece of good news. Net cash burn came to roughly $28 million, and cash and cash equivalents stood at about $134 million at quarter-end, excluding restricted funds. Just as notable, the quarter passed without any drawdown of the ATM programme or other capital raises. For a business that has spent years consuming capital faster than it brings it in, the reduced outflow buys management a measure of breathing room — though not much margin for error if projects slip.
Orders Are Landing, but the Clock Is Ticking
On the commercial side, Plug Power can point to tangible progress. The supply agreement for 280 MW of electrolysers with Arcadia eFuels, signed just over three weeks ago for the ENDOR project in Denmark, shows that large-scale contracts are still being awarded. A 50 MW order from Orica and engineering work on Hy2gen's Courant project round out the pipeline. Management also reaffirmed its full-year 2026 guidance of roughly 15% to 16% revenue growth, after projecting an increase of more than 10% for the third quarter versus the prior-year period.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?
What investors now want is evidence that these agreements convert into actual cash inflows. A well-filled order book counts for little without reliable execution, and the market has stopped paying for vision alone. Rising interest rates and a more cautious investment climate have made every cent of liquidity subject to scrutiny, while customer projects worldwide are slow to reach final investment decisions.
Two Brokerages Trim Their Sights
That impatience is visible in the analyst community. On Wednesday, Susquehanna cut its price target to $1.75 from $2.50 while keeping a Neutral rating. Morgan Stanley reduced its target to $1.20 from $1.65 in parallel. According to media reports, the sluggish adoption of hydrogen technology and the demanding rate environment are weighing on valuation prospects. Even growing revenue no longer satisfies the sceptics while the profitability threshold remains distant, and the focus among investors is shifting from long-term potential to short-term milestones.
Those milestones arrive quickly. Plug Power reports full third-quarter results on 9 November 2026, followed by its virtual Global Plug Symposium on 19 November 2026. At that event, management will need to lay out in detail how it intends to fund the long-term build-out without further diluting existing shareholders. Until then, sentiment is likely to stay fragile — the green transition is real, but for its pioneers the road is proving considerably rougher than hoped.
