Plug Power's second-quarter report delivered the kind of beat that typically triggers a straightforward rally: revenue topped analyst forecasts, losses narrowed, and management raised its full-year growth outlook. Yet the hydrogen specialist's stock is now caught between two competing narratives — one rooted in improving fundamentals, the other in a chart that still looks technically fragile.

The numbers themselves were unambiguous. Revenue came in at $178.3 million for the quarter, clearing the $168.8 million consensus estimate by 5.6%. Management responded by lifting its 2026 revenue growth guidance from a prior range of 13% to 15% to a new band of 15% to 16%. The gross margin, meanwhile, continued its march toward breakeven after sitting at negative 31% in the same quarter a year earlier.

Cost discipline does the heavy lifting

The most striking improvement came from the expense side of the ledger. Operating costs were cut in half year over year to roughly $62 million. On a GAAP basis, the per-share loss narrowed from $0.20 to $0.14, while the adjusted figure improved to negative $0.07 from negative $0.18. Free cash flow also showed meaningful progress, with the outflow shrinking from $230.4 million to $100.4 million.

Operational momentum backed up the financials. Plug Power installed 1,666 GenDrive units, a 125% jump from the prior year. Service revenue climbed 82% to approximately $30 million at a 27% margin, while fuel revenue rose 15% to about $39 million, with its margin improving from negative 91% to negative 48%. The company also received more than $80 million in liquidity from its agreements with US data center operator Stream US Data Centers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

A valuation gap that cuts both ways

Despite the operational progress, the market's enthusiasm remains tempered. Analysts maintain a consensus "Hold" rating with an average price target of $3.54 — a figure that implies roughly 55% upside from Wednesday's US closing price. The disconnect is visible in the valuation metrics: Plug Power trades at 4.28 times sales against a sector average of 1.97, and its price-to-book ratio of 3.93 exceeds the sector's 3.28.

In European trading, the stock closed Wednesday at €1.98, up about 2.5% on the day. Over the past seven sessions, the gain has accumulated to 11%, and the shares sit 40% higher than they did twelve months ago. Still, the stock remains roughly 51% below its 52-week high of €4.04, reached on October 6 of last year.

The technical picture tells a different story

The secondary source's technical analysis adds a layer of caution that the earnings beat alone doesn't erase. The stock trades 7.4% below its 50-day moving average of €2.14 and 7.6% under the 200-day average of €2.15 — both levels now acting as overhead resistance. The 30-day trend showed a slight decline of 0.7% before the earnings surprise, suggesting sentiment was already fragile heading into the report. An annualized volatility reading of 62% underscores how quickly this stock can change direction.

On the day of the earnings release, the shares gained 3.1%, and they now sit 65% above their 52-week low of €1.20, set in early September. That distance from the bottom offers some comfort, but the gap to the year's high remains substantial.

What happens next

The pivotal question is whether the raised growth target of 15% to 16% can push the gross margin into positive territory by year-end. That determination will separate a genuine re-rating from a temporary bounce. If the company clears that hurdle, the case for a move toward the €3.08 analyst target — which implies the same 55% upside as the dollar-denominated target — gains credibility. If it stumbles, the 50-day average at €2.14 looms as a technical barrier that could send the stock back into a volatile sideways pattern.

The next official checkpoint comes with the third-quarter margin report, which will reveal whether "approaching breakeven" translates into actual profitability. Until then, Plug Power's stock is likely to remain a battleground between improving fundamentals and a chart that hasn't yet confirmed the turnaround.
