Plug Power's Danish Electrolyser Order Meets a Sober Market

A 280-MW electrolyser supply agreement for a Danish e-fuels project would once have been enough to send Plug Power's stock soaring. This time, the market barely blinked.

Instead, the hydrogen specialist's shares shed 6.3% on Friday to close at EUR 1.24, having earlier touched a fresh 52-week low of EUR 1.21. The muted reaction says as much about the wider sector as it does about Plug Power itself. Rising interest rates and the slow grind of industrial hydrogen rollouts have made investors far less forgiving of capital-hungry growth stories, and peers including Bloom Energy and FuelCell Energy have felt the same chill.

Analysts Trim Their Sights

Wall Street's revised models landed midweek. Morgan Stanley cut its price target to $1.20 from $1.65 while keeping an "Underweight" rating, pointing squarely at softer long-term expectations for hydrogen technology adoption. Susquehanna followed on the same day, lowering its target to $1.75 from $2.50 with a "Neutral" stance intact. The message from both: enthusiasm is giving way to hard arithmetic.

A Quarter of Restraint

Against that backdrop, Plug Power's preliminary third-quarter 2026 figures read as an exercise in discipline. Management guided to revenue growth of more than 10% year on year, alongside continued improvement in gross margin. Net cash burn came in at roughly $28 million, and unrestricted cash and cash equivalents stood at about $134 million at the quarter's end.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Perhaps the most telling detail is what the company did not do: it raised no fresh capital during the period, neither through its at-the-market facility nor via any other equity or debt measure. For a business long associated with dilution, that restraint carries weight.

Scaling remains the harder test. Three weeks ago the company unveiled the 280-MW electrolyser supply deal with Arcadia eFuels for the ENDOR project in Denmark, paired with a strategic partnership covering future ventures. Deals of that size confirm genuine demand for the technology; the open question is how quickly announcements convert into profitable execution.

Two Dates Circled in Red

Plug Power has confirmed it will publish full third-quarter 2026 results after the US market close on 9 November 2026, with a conference call scheduled for 16:30 ET. Ten days later, on 19 November 2026, management hosts its annual Global Plug Symposium, where investors will look for concrete detail on the technology roadmap and the company's competitive positioning.

For the full year 2026, Plug Power reiterated guidance of roughly 15% to 16% revenue growth.

An Insider Filing and a Thin Margin for Error

One further disclosure drew attention. A Form 144 notice filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission showed Benjamin Haycraft intending to sell 9,375 common shares under an existing trading plan. The filing records an intent to sell and does not confirm that any transaction has taken place.

With rates still weighing on valuations and large-scale projects slow to get off the ground worldwide, the room for missteps is narrow. November's numbers and the symposium that follows will be scrutinised for evidence that the path to profitability is as solid as management insists — a reminder of how fine the line is between an industrial vision and financial reality.
