Plug Power has spent years asking investors to believe in a hydrogen future. Now it is asking them to wait for one. The company's stock changed hands at 1.32 euros on Thursday, up 2.2 percent, a modest bounce that does little to disguise a brutal twelve-month stretch in which the shares have lost 55 percent of their value. The previous session brought a fresh 52-week low of 1.24 euros, a level that captures the market's lingering doubt about whether the company's remaining liquidity can carry its expansion much further.

That doubt is not irrational. The green hydrogen sector has discovered that the global energy transition is moving more slowly, more bureaucratically and more capital-hungry than its early champions promised. For equipment makers like Plug Power, the challenge is no longer storytelling. It is surviving the gap between signed contracts and actual cash.

A Quarter Without Dilution

The company's preliminary, unaudited figures for the third quarter of 2026 offer one genuinely encouraging detail. Net cash burn came to roughly $28 million, leaving about $134 million in cash and cash equivalents at period's end, excluding restricted liquidity. What stands out is not the size of the buffer but how it was preserved: Plug Power raised nothing during the quarter through its ATM share issuance program or any other equity or debt measure. For shareholders wary of constant dilution, that restraint marks a meaningful shift.

Management is also pointing to top-line momentum. Third-quarter revenue is expected to grow more than 10 percent year over year, alongside an anticipated improvement in gross margin. For the full year 2026, the company is holding to its forecast of roughly 15 to 16 percent revenue growth.

Whether that combination — slower spending, faster sales — can be sustained is the question now driving the investment case. In a market where every dollar burned is scrutinized, discipline on outflows matters more than optimistic projections.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Analysts Cool on the Story

The skepticism on Wall Street runs deeper than any single quarter's numbers. On October 14, Morgan Stanley cut its price target to $1.20 while keeping an "Underweight" rating, citing reduced long-term growth expectations as hydrogen adoption lags. Susquehanna trimmed its target on the same day, from $2.50 to $1.75, though it maintained a "Neutral" stance.

The broader consensus has cooled noticeably. A few years ago, the industry anticipated explosive demand for electrolysers. Today, caution prevails, with industrial customers delaying final investment decisions. Without dependable regulatory frameworks and offtake agreements, many large corporations are hesitant to commit billions to new facilities.

Denmark Shows the Promise and the Lag

The business has not stood still, and international projects illustrate its theoretical scale. Roughly two weeks ago, Plug Power signed a supply agreement with Arcadia eFuels for 280 megawatts of GenEco electrolysers for the ENDOR project in Denmark. The deal targets synthetic kerosene produced from renewable electricity, and a strategic partnership secures Plug Power's role as preferred supplier for potential e-SAF projects totaling more than 1 gigawatt. Synthetic aviation fuels are widely viewed as one of the most promising applications for green hydrogen.

Yet the same agreements carry clear conditions. Deliveries for the Danish project will not begin until the formal notice to proceed is issued. Between a signed contract and money actually hitting the books, this industry routinely leaves a substantial time gap — a delay that matters enormously when the cash runway is finite.

November 9 as the Verdict

The next real test arrives soon. Final quarterly results are scheduled for November 9, when investors will learn whether the operational turnaround in margins and revenue is strengthening the fundamental base enough to fund the company's flagship projects without another trip to capital markets.

Plug Power has bought itself time by slowing the bleed. Whether that cushion proves sufficient depends less on cost control inside its own factories than on how quickly the global industrial economy converts its decarbonization pledges into firm, large-scale orders.
