Partners Group is pressing ahead with a sweeping overhaul of its €6.6 billion Global Value SICAV, converting the evergreen vehicle into an umbrella fund split into two specialised sub-portfolios. The move, subject to shareholder approval, is designed to answer a growing appetite for distinct liquidity profiles and investment horizons among private-markets investors.

Under the plan, one sleeve will target long-term capital appreciation through a dedicated Compounding Fund, while the second will focus on crystallising gains already accrued in the portfolio. The realisation-oriented vehicle carries an ambitious objective: unlocking returns of up to 4.5x the capital originally committed. Since inception, the flagship has delivered 4.5 times invested capital, according to the firm.

The restructuring speaks directly to the structural tensions that have weighed on evergreen structures of late. Such open-ended funds demand a careful balance between incoming subscriptions, portfolio growth and the redemption rights promised to investors — a trilemma that has prompted caution across the market.

Analysts Trim Forecasts as Exits Drag

The operational backdrop remains difficult. Delayed exits from portfolio companies and softer assumptions on returns have pushed analysts to revisit their numbers. On 28 September, UBS analyst Mate Nemes cut his 12-month price target on Partners Group shares to CHF 670 from CHF 705, keeping a "Neutral" rating. Nemes pointed to slower divestments, more conservative return expectations and higher costs for currency hedging.

AlphaValue/Baader Europe likewise lowered its earnings estimates while retaining a buy recommendation. The research house cited more cautious forecasts for assets under management following the half-year results, attributing the revision to weaker realisations and reduced performance fees.

The broader listed private-equity segment has lagged the wider equity market this year, according to senior portfolio manager Benjamin Lorenz, who flagged weakness in the software sector as a key drag on sentiment in an interview on Tuesday.

Selective Deals Continue

Even against that headwind, Partners Group is not standing still. On 15 September the firm became the largest external shareholder in SEG, an international sports talent agency — marking its entry into the sports sector. The plan is to more than double the initial equity investment, with founder Kees Vos and existing shareholders remaining on board.

The same day, the group's financing arm arranged a senior financing package of more than €300 million for MDT technologies, supporting Bregal Unternehmerkapital's acquisition of a majority stake in the electronics manufacturer from IK Partners.

Shares Stay Under Pressure

Market scepticism is reflected in a pronounced valuation discount. The stock closed at €647.40 on Friday, leaving it down 39% year-to-date and hovering just 3.9% above its 52-week low of €623.00. With the revamp of its flagship fund now in motion, Partners Group is betting the new structure can steady investor confidence in its future earnings power.
