Partners Group Rebuilds Buyout Unit and Fortifies Credit Defences as Stock Sits 38% Below Year-Start
Published on 10/19/2026 at 15:01 | Editorial boerse-global.dePartners Group is pressing ahead with a twin-track overhaul of its operations, trimming staff in its core buyout business while steering capital toward private credit and shielding three portfolio companies from outside creditors. The Swiss asset manager’s shares closed Friday at EUR 655.20, down 38% since the start of the year and just 5.2% above their 52-week low — a backdrop that frames both the retrenchment and the offensive.
Buyout Desk Slimmed After Performance Review
Dozens of roles across the private equity division have been cut or reassigned worldwide following an internal review of performance data, according to a Bloomberg report. The changes touched staff at various levels of seniority: some left the firm, while others moved internally into the infrastructure and royalty segments.
Partners Group said the headcount in its private equity team remains within its long-term average despite the reshuffle. Bloomberg attributed the adjustments to weaker returns from older portfolios and rising redemption requests from investors in open-ended evergreen vehicles — pressures that have made flexible deployment of resources a priority.
Contractual Walls Around EUR 6 Billion of Refinancing
Risk management on existing holdings has moved to the fore at the same time. Partners Group is restricting hedge funds’ access to the debt of three portfolio companies — Emeria, Ammega and watchmaker Breitling — which together face maturities of roughly EUR 6 billion in 2028, Bloomberg reported.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Partners Group?
At Emeria, the company rejected requests from hedge funds to be added to the list of eligible lenders, a move aimed at heading off early influence over upcoming refinancings. The defensive posture on legacy liabilities runs alongside a deliberate expansion of the firm’s own lending offering.
Private Credit Push Targets Steady Payouts
With institutional investors hunting stable distributions in a changed rate environment, Partners Group has been building out its presence in private credit. Roughly two weeks ago it launched a global multi-sector private credit income strategy, an open-ended evergreen vehicle available to institutions and private-wealth clients alike.
The strategy invests in direct loans, secondary credit positions, fund financings and liquid credit instruments, and targets high single-digit to low double-digit returns generated predominantly from running income. On 6 October the firm published a chartbook titled “Higher-for-Longer” to frame the approach against the prevailing interest-rate backdrop.
London-Listed Trust to Wind Down
A separate external structure produced a notable decision of its own. Shareholders of Partners Group Private Equity Limited, which is listed in London and managed by Partners Group Holding AG, approved an orderly wind-down of its portfolio, according to media reports. The holding company is not the entity being wound up — a distinction that leaves the manager’s core business untouched by the vote.
Insiders Buy, Calendar Set for March
Board and management members added to their personal holdings in the company around two weeks ago, a show of confidence from the top. The stock gained 0.9% in today’s session, trading at EUR 661.00. How the strategic reorientation and market conditions feed through to the numbers will become clearer next spring: Partners Group has scheduled publication of its 2026 annual results for 16 March 2027.
