Partners Group Juggles Fee Warning and Deal Spree as Shares Sink to Fresh Lows
Published on 09/02/2026 at 19:50 | Editorial boerse-global.deThe Zug-based asset manager is sending investors mixed signals: while its stock continues to slide on a trimmed profit outlook and an impending leadership transition, the firm is quietly pressing ahead with a string of infrastructure and consumer investments that signal no let-up in its dealmaking ambitions.
Shares in Partners Group fell another 2.4 percent on Wednesday to 705.40 euros, extending a slide that now stands at 9.6 percent over the past week. The stock has shed roughly 34 percent since the start of the year and trades barely 2.7 percent above its 52-week low, with a relative strength index of 33.6 pointing to deeply oversold conditions. The latest leg of the sell-off was triggered by the company's half-year report, which revealed a 13 percent drop in net profit to 502 million Swiss francs and a 7 percent decline in revenue to 1.12 billion francs.
The biggest culprit was the performance fee line, traditionally a key earnings driver. Those fees tumbled 39 percent to 216 million francs and now account for just 19 percent of total revenue. Management responded by slashing its full-year guidance for performance fees to 20 to 25 percent of revenue, down sharply from the 25 to 40 percent range previously communicated. The company attributed the downgrade to delays in portfolio disposals, some of which will now only close in 2027.
That caution stands in contrast to the firm's investment activity. On Wednesday, Partners Group confirmed it had acquired a 10 percent stake in atNorth, a pan-Nordic data centre platform whose contracted EBITDA has recently doubled. The purchase follows August's announcement of a majority investment in AVK Power Solutions, a provider of power infrastructure for data centres across the UK and Europe. Partners Group plans to deploy $1 billion in equity into AVK, with management retaining a minority stake, as part of a strategy to build an energy-as-a-service platform centred on microgrids backed by a project pipeline exceeding two gigawatts.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Partners Group?
Reports also suggest the firm is in exclusive talks to acquire a majority stake in Aroma-Zone, a French natural cosmetics and wellness brand formerly owned by Eurazeo, with the target valued at around $2.3 billion. No deal has been confirmed.
The flurry of transactions comes as the company navigates a leadership change. CEO David Layton will move into the role of chief investment officer at the turn of the year, handing operational control to Roberto Cagnati and Juri Jenkner as co-CEOs. Both have been with the firm for more than two decades, and the transition has caused little concern among analysts.
Not all metrics pointed south. Assets under management edged up to 186 billion Swiss francs from 185 billion at the end of 2025, while management fees rose 6 percent to 905 million francs. New capital commitments reached 16.0 billion francs in the first half, up from 12.2 billion in the same period last year. The company reaffirmed its full-year fundraising target of $26 billion to $32 billion, though it expects tail-down effects of $10 billion to $13 billion from maturing closed-end programmes.
The stock's decline is not a new phenomenon. Just weeks ago, Partners Group was forced to restrict redemptions across several open-ended funds, triggering double-digit share price losses. That setback, combined with Wednesday's guidance cut, has left the shares trading about 23 percent below their 200-day moving average and roughly 42 percent off the 52-week high set last September.
For investors, the central question is whether the momentum in assets under management and fundraising can offset the softer fee outlook and the leadership handover. The ongoing investment push into data centre infrastructure and consumer brands suggests management is not retreating from its growth strategy — even as the market punishes the stock for near-term headwinds.
