Palantir's Dual Tailwind: Two Banks, One $500 Billion Thesis

Palantir rose 5.3% Friday to EUR 186.56 after Goldman Sachs upgraded to Buy and Barclays started coverage at Overweight.

Wall Street's research desks rarely move in lockstep, but Palantir found itself on the receiving end of back-to-back bullish calls last week — and the market wasted no time responding. The stock climbed 5.3% on Friday to close at EUR 186.56, pulling within a hair's breadth of its 52-week high of EUR 186.64 and lifting the company's market capitalization to EUR 426.64 billion.

The twin endorsements came from opposite sides of the Atlantic. Goldman Sachs upgraded the shares to "Buy" with a $230 price target, while Barclays initiated coverage with an "Overweight" rating and a $265 target. Analyst Gabriela Borges, who authored the Goldman note, pointed to a structural shift: bespoke enterprise software is poised to overtake the traditional market for off-the-shelf applications within the next one to three years.

The Sovereign AI Prize

At the heart of both calls sits the same conviction — that demand for sovereign artificial intelligence is opening a vast runway for the software group. Goldman Sachs pegs Palantir's total addressable market at as much as $500 billion, driven largely by government institutions and heavily regulated industries that insist on keeping their models and data entirely within their own security perimeters.

Palantir has positioned itself squarely for that shift with dedicated sovereign AI offerings. The bank's revenue projections reflect the thesis: Goldman forecasts $8.371 billion in sales for fiscal 2026, scaling to $25.747 billion by 2029.

Barclays' Anthony Valentini, who launched his coverage on Thursday, emphasized the company's technological edge in data analytics for the U.S. defense sector. His $265 target implies further upside from Friday's close.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?

Defense Contracts as the Backbone

The government business provides a stable foundation beneath the civilian ambitions. Roughly three weeks ago, Palantir secured another U.S. Army contract, and the stock has gained 21.5% since. In September, the company — alongside partner Anduril — won a production order for the TITAN intelligence system worth $192 million, of which $127 million falls to Palantir.

Those wins help explain why the bull case has gained traction. But the analysts are not blind to the risks. A slower-than-expected rollout of AI technology inside corporations, along with volatility in government procurement cycles, could derail the trajectory.

The NHS Question Mark

Overseas, Palantir's entrenched position with institutional clients is facing its own test. According to a Monday report in the British newspaper City A.M., the UK's National Health Service may be unable to replace Palantir before the deadline on its £330 million data contract expires. A health minister said officials are currently reviewing the continuity and reliability of services — a situation that underscores the steep switching costs Palantir enjoys with core customers.

On the partnership front, the company continues to build out its ecosystem. Palantir and Armada announced a collaboration on sovereign AI, with Palantir naming Armada its first certified partner for modular data centers. Marrying Palantir's software with mobile data center solutions is intended to bring advanced analytics to remote locations as well.

Data, Politics, and Reputation

Not everything in the pipeline is comfortable. Democracy Docket reported Wednesday, citing documents it reviewed, that U.S. immigration agency ICE sought to transmit voter data to Palantir for its enforcement tool known as ELITE. According to that account, the agency was waiting for Palantir to ingest the data.

Such episodes carry meaningful reputational risk and can spawn protracted controversy. Should privacy concerns or political opposition intensify, delays in contract awards or legal battles over existing work could follow.

Palantir at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What Has to Go Right

The current valuation leaves little room for disappointment. To justify it over the long haul, Palantir must confirm its high growth rates in the coming quarters, and management faces the task of converting its technological leadership with military and government clients into a broader commercial business at pace.

Near term, the stock's ability to defend the zone just below its record high — supported by fresh partnerships — will determine whether the upward momentum holds. A sustained breakout above the recent peak would vindicate the analysts' optimism. Should sentiment sour instead, whether from mounting regulatory hurdles or controversies over government data, investors should brace for a pronounced correction.

The next concrete catalyst is the UK health service's assessment of service continuity. Its outcome will signal just how resilient Palantir's existing government contracts remain on the international stage.
