Palantir's Blockbuster Quarter Collides With a Stalling Order Book
Published on 11/05/2026 at 04:01 | Editorial boerse-global.dePalantir's latest quarterly report landed with the kind of headline numbers most software companies can only dream about. Yet the stock has been sliding, and the reason has little to do with what the company earned and everything to do with what it has yet to sign.
Shares fell 3.4% on the day, according to Axios, which traced the drop to investor unease over a total contract value that barely moved from the prior quarter. Broader doubts about how long the artificial intelligence rally can run added to the pressure, the report said — even though both revenue and profit cleared Wall Street's expectations.
The Numbers That Beat
For the third quarter of 2026, Palantir booked revenue of $2.313 billion, up 96% year over year. GAAP diluted earnings per share came in at $0.44, according to company figures. Those results explain little of the selling on their own.
What matters more, in the market's reading, is the durability of that pace. The debate has shifted from whether the current business is performing to whether the next leg of growth is visible.
On the same report, Palantir put total closed contract value at $2.918 billion — growth of just 6% year over year, a sharp deceleration from 49% in the preceding quarter. The two measures track different things: slower contract growth does not mechanically translate into weaker revenue, and a strong top line does not erase questions about future bookings. The stock is caught precisely between those two statements.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?
A Commercial Business That Just Overtook Washington
The counterargument sits in the US commercial segment. Revenue from American commercial customers climbed 148% to $984 million in the third quarter of 2026, surpassing US government revenue for the first time.
That adds a second dimension to the growth discussion — not just speed, but mix. The commercial segment's first-ever lead over government work is a concrete operating fact. It does not answer the contract-dynamics question, but it undercuts any blanket claim that the business as a whole disappointed.
Palantir also raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $8.530–$8.534 billion and lifted its outlook for the US commercial business, which it now sees exceeding $3.559 billion — growth of at least 143%. Guidance remains an expectation rather than realized revenue, but it belongs in the picture: investor skepticism is meeting a raised company forecast.
William Blair Flags the Backlog
The concerns about order development were attributed by Reuters to William Blair's analysts. Louie DiPalma said investors are now scrutinizing the sustainability of AI companies' growth more closely, according to Axios, which also cited the largely flat quarter-over-quarter backlog as a further source of worry after the report.
Reuters reported that growth in total contract value for the US commercial segment slowed to 11% year over year, down from more than 153% in the prior quarter.
Barclays Takes the Other Side
Not everyone read the quarter the same way. Barclays analyst Anthony Valentini raised his price target on Palantir to $273 while keeping an overweight rating, according to media reports. That stance cuts against the weak market reaction without disproving the durability worries — it shows the same results can support a more constructive view. A price target is a valuation perspective, not evidence about future performance.
Separately, Palantir and Stagwell announced an expanded AI partnership aimed at reshaping corporate marketing, and Palantir said it would extend its sovereign AI offering to a new customer group.
For investors, the takeaway is to keep the arguments apart. Reported growth is strong; contract momentum raises questions about continuation. The larger AI trend frames that argument rather than settling it. The test is not whether any single metric impresses, but whether revenue, new contracts and guidance together form a convincing picture over time.
