OMV's Green Methanol Pivot and Historic CEO Handover Collide With a Record Share Price

The stars are aligning at OMV in a way the Austrian energy group has rarely seen in its 68-year history. A new chief executive is about to take the helm for the first time, a fresh supply agreement has strengthened its renewable fuels pipeline, and the shares are hovering just below an all-time high that was touched in the past week.
Investors who bought at the start of the year are sitting on a 42 percent gain, with the stock closing at 67.05 euros in Vienna on the latest trading day. That leaves the equity roughly three percent shy of the 68.80-euro record set on August 21, though the secondary market data shows the peak was briefly extended to 69.15 euros before a pullback to 67.25 euros.
A Leadership Transition With Historic Weight
Emma Delaney steps into the chief executive role on September 1, becoming the first woman to lead OMV in its corporate history. The supervisory board confirmed her appointment back in May, granting an initial three-year mandate with an option for extension. Delaney arrives with more than three decades of international energy experience, much of it in senior leadership positions at BP, and is tasked with driving transformation, portfolio development, and sustainable value creation.
Her predecessor, Alfred Stern, departs after 19 years with the group, describing the handover as orderly. The timing is fortuitous: the strong first-half results released roughly three weeks ago gave the shares a notable lift, as did the disclosure of board-level share purchases. Those catalysts have faded from the headlines but continue to underpin the current valuation.
The Kassø Deal Deepens the Green Fuels Strategy
Alongside the leadership change, OMV has locked in a multi-year offtake agreement for green e-methanol from the Kassø facility in Denmark. The plant, developed by European Energy with Mitsui as a partner, will supply the feedstock for the FAME component used in biodiesel production at OMV's Burghausen refinery in Germany.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Omv?
OMV becomes the fourth publicly known customer for the Danish facility, and the first delivery has already been completed — a sign that the agreement has moved beyond the signing ceremony and into operational reality. The deal reinforces the company's broader strategy of securing feedstocks for renewable fuels as it pivots toward more sustainable product lines.
Fundamentals That Justify the Rally
The operational picture supports the share price strength. Adjusted operating profit for the second quarter climbed 65 percent to 1.71 billion euros, propelled by the newly formed Borouge International petrochemical joint venture, which more than doubled its adjusted EBITDA quarter over quarter.
Yet the analyst community remains divided on whether the stock has run ahead of itself. RBC maintains its "Underperform" rating with a 60-euro price target, while Barclays confirmed its "Underweight" stance but nudged its target from 53 to 57 euros. The consensus price target sits at 60.33 euros — notably below where the shares currently trade.
Technical Indicators Point to Momentum, Not Exhaustion
Chart watchers see a stock in robust shape. OMV trades roughly 8.7 percent above its 50-day moving average and nearly 18 percent above the 200-day line, signaling an intact medium-term uptrend. The relative strength index reads 62, which suggests the market is not yet overheated but leaves limited room for further immediate gains without a consolidation phase.
The 50-day average itself has climbed to 61.71 euros, reflecting the sustained upward drift in the share price over recent months.
What Comes Next
For investors, the converging narratives are unusual: a historically significant leadership transition, a tangible step forward in renewable fuels, and a share price holding near record levels. The central question now is whether Delaney can sustain the operational momentum her predecessor built. The Kassø agreement provides one answer — a concrete demonstration that the transformation strategy can produce commercial contracts, not just PowerPoint slides.
The coming weeks will test whether the market continues to reward OMV's dual-track approach of maintaining its oil and gas core while building out greener product lines. With the stock trading above the average analyst price target, the burden of proof has shifted to the company's execution.
