OHB SE posts strong H1 growth and record order book, but shares fall 66% from peak amid vague order details and market skepticism.

The numbers coming out of Bremen look like the stuff of a growth story. Revenue momentum, a fortified balance sheet, and a backlog that has never been bigger. Yet OHB SE's share price keeps heading the other way, leaving investors to puzzle over a disconnect that has become impossible to ignore.

When the space and technology group reported its first-half figures on Thursday, the headline metrics were hard to fault. Total output climbed 11 percent to EUR 628 million, up from EUR 564 million in the same period a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA jumped 31 percent to EUR 60 million, with the corresponding margin improving from 8.2 percent to 9.6 percent. Management also confirmed its full-year guidance of EUR 1.4 billion in total output and an adjusted EBITDA margin between 10.5 and 11 percent.

The order book, meanwhile, reached a record EUR 3.30 billion after six months of the fiscal year, with management pointing to a project pipeline of roughly EUR 20 billion. CFO Tim Tecklenburg put the defense-related share of that pipeline at about 40 percent — a telling figure for a company that increasingly positions itself as a European champion in the space economy and one of only three major system integrators for space systems on the continent.

A Capital Raise That Changed the Balance Sheet

June brought a EUR 484 million capital increase, with 1,613,023 new shares issued. The Fuchs founding family still holds 60.3 percent of the company, while KKR's Orchid Lux HoldCo owns 19.7 percent. The free float also rose to 19.7 percent as a result of the transaction — a prerequisite for the index inclusion the company expects this year in both the SDAX and TecDAX.

The injection has left OHB in a net cash position, giving it room to expand capacity. The expansion is already visible at OHB Space UK, where the team is growing from 14 to over 100 engineers and a facility in Bristol is set to become one of England's largest cleanrooms. That follows a EUR 24 million contract for the ESA's EnVision mission. In Italy, OHB Italia was tapped by space agency ASI as prime contractor for the second generation of the PRISMA hyperspectral Earth observation mission, working alongside Thales Alenia Space Italia and Leonardo, with operations planned through the end of 2031.

Why the Market Isn't Cheering

None of this has stopped the sell-off. The shares fell 2.55 percent on Monday to EUR 229.00, after closing Friday at EUR 235.00. Over the past 30 days, the stock has dropped nearly 13 percent. The distance from the 52-week high of EUR 688.00, set on May 21, now stands at minus 66.72 percent — a brutal round trip for anyone who bought at the peak.

The primary article notes the market's muted response may stem from the vagueness of the record-order announcement: no exact order value or program details were publicly disclosed, leaving investors to take the company's word without being able to assess the substance. That lack of specificity, combined with lingering risk aversion toward the stock, appears to be outweighing the positive news flow.

And yet, zooming out tells a different story. The stock remains up 95.73 percent since the start of the year. The scale of the swings in both directions — euphoria and sell-off within twelve months — underscores just how volatile this name has become.

Analysts Split on What Comes Next

Fresh coverage from two houses in early August captures the debate. Deutsche Bank initiated with a "Buy" and a EUR 275 price target, citing roughly EUR 35 billion that Germany alone has earmarked for defense-related space spending over the next five years — a pipeline the bank sees as significant for domestic players like OHB. Management, according to the bank, is targeting a tripling of revenue in the medium term.

NuWays AG reaffirmed its "Buy" on August 7 with a EUR 340 price target based on a DCF model, pointing to margin expansion in the second quarter on more moderate growth — while conceding that the large orders central to the investment thesis have yet to materialize. Other houses initiated coverage in early August with targets ranging from EUR 250 to EUR 360, though at least one issued a "Neutral" vote, flagging valuation and execution risks.

Political Tailwinds and a Defining Question

The political backdrop adds another layer. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius visited OHB recently to review progress on the Sparrow satellite program, and the company is actively negotiating over IRIS², the EU's satellite communications initiative, where it is involved in the medium Earth orbit segment with 18 satellites. The European Commission has said it hopes to wrap up negotiations on the broader constellation over the summer.

For now, the central question remains unanswered: can a record backlog offset the sharp correction of recent weeks? Fundamentally, the news points to a healthy business. Technically, the chart shows no reaction. The market appears to be waiting either for hard numbers on the order value or for signed contracts to back up the pipeline talk. Until then, talk of a genuine trend reversal at OHB remains speculation. The next checkpoint comes on November 11, when third-quarter figures are due.
