OHB SE Eyes EUR 1.4 Billion Output as Defense Demand Grows

For years, European satellite builders sat on the sidelines of institutional portfolios, treated more as civil-science curiosities than as infrastructure for hard security. That perception is now being tested. As European governments expand defense budgets, orbital reconnaissance, navigation and secure communications have shifted from prestige projects to strategic necessities — and OHB SE is positioning itself squarely at that intersection.

The Bremen-based space and technology group expects consolidated total output of roughly EUR 1.4 billion for the 2026 financial year, paired with an adjusted EBITDA margin of between 10.5% and 11.0%. Underpinning that guidance is sustained demand for satellite systems and space-based applications, with the operational business drawing noticeable momentum from the growing weight of European security and defense programs.

A Framework Deal in the Nordics

On September 24, subsidiary OHB Sweden signed a memorandum of understanding with Swedish defense group Saab. The agreement establishes a framework for deepening cooperation on space-based defense capabilities, with both partners examining joint contributions from existing and future satellite systems. No concrete order has yet been placed, and the companies disclosed no financial details.

Even so, the tie-up marks a notable shift: established defense contractors are now seeking direct alliances with specialized satellite manufacturers, linking orbital sensor technology to military operational systems capable of delivering real-time situational awareness. Europe's push for strategic autonomy is accelerating that process. The continent can no longer afford to rely exclusively on non-European partners for critical space-based intelligence, and for space companies that opens access to long-term defense budgets that are far more resiliently funded than pure research programs.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?

Index Return Widens the Investor Base

Capturing that shift in the equity market requires visibility among institutional investors, and OHB's return to the TecDAX on September 21 — replacing IT services provider CANCOM — was a significant step. Index provider STOXX carried out the change as part of its regular review. Inclusion in the technology index is designed above all to improve the group's presence with international investors, triggering automatic inflows from passive index funds and pushing fund managers to return the stock to their watchlists.

The sector's persistent undervaluation is underscored by the verdict of major research houses. Michael Filatov of Berenberg reiterated his buy rating with a price target of 358 euros, arguing that the space sector remains heavily neglected by investors. Deutsche Bank Research had already struck a positive note the previous Friday, following a roadshow: the bank kept its buy rating and raised its target for OHB from 275 to 300 euros. Analysts highlight in particular the visibility of the project pipeline in the space and security segment.

Ownership and the Road Ahead

The shareholder structure provides a dependable foundation for expansion. The majority of shares are held by the Fuchs family. Financial investor KKR reduced its stake as part of the June capital increase and, according to the half-year report of August 6, held roughly 20% of the shares. KKR has accompanied the group since 2023 as a minority shareholder through Orchid Lux HoldCo S.à r.l.

On the market, the operational story is already reflected in the share price. At a recent level of 179.40 euros, the stock is up 53% since the start of the year — a clear upward move, yet one that still signals skepticism when measured against the optimistic analyst targets. The next concrete indicator of operational progress arrives on November 12, when the group publishes its nine-month figures for the current financial year. That is when OHB must demonstrate how its strategic pivot translates into actual numbers. In the end, geopolitical vision alone will not decide the outcome — the ability to convert partnerships and index weighting into profitable order growth will.
