A letter of intent is not a purchase order — and that distinction sits at the heart of how investors should read OHB SE's latest announcement. The Bremen-based space group has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan's Astroscale Holdings, and the shares responded with a sharp move. What the market bought, however, is a prospect rather than a booked revenue stream.

The stock climbed 8.2% on the day of the announcement, with one reading of the session putting the advance at 8.8%. Either way, the gain reflects expectations rather than any quantified contribution to earnings. No concrete orders or financial terms accompanied the agreement.

Security, geography and a political backdrop

Signed during a German-Japanese industry gathering in Tokyo, the MoU was unveiled while Chancellor Friedrich Merz was on his Asia trip. The setting is more than stagecraft. According to Deutsche Welle, Berlin and Tokyo intend to deepen cooperation on trade, cutting-edge technology and security, including a stronger defence-industrial base.

The scope of the OHB-Astroscale arrangement runs across space safety, space situational awareness and in-orbit services. Joint projects would pool expertise in satellite systems engineering, mission operations and orbital servicing. The core of the collaboration pairs OHB's German operations with Astroscale's UK business, while the partners also plan to explore opportunities tied to Astroscale's activities in Japan and other markets. That geographic reach is notable: the tie-up is not confined to the two countries where it was politically presented.

Technology policy and security policy are being negotiated in the same breath here, and OHB's planned cooperation plugs directly into the protection of satellite-based infrastructure. Strategically, the logic holds up. The commercial weight will only become measurable once concrete projects emerge.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?

What the exchange is actually pricing

The nub of the question is whether investors are buying additional revenue or merely the hope of it. With a memorandum of understanding, the sober answer is the latter. OHB and Astroscale intend to examine joint opportunities; that exploratory mandate should not be dressed up in language that suggests a secured business.

The proximity to the politically charged theme of security makes the distinction all the more necessary. Against that, OHB already publishes operating figures against which expectations can be tested. In the first half of 2026, total output rose 11% to EUR 627.9 million — reported business development, not a forecast. At the end of June, the order backlog stood at roughly EUR 3.3 billion, the economic frame into which any future Astroscale projects would have to fit.

MediaMobil and Eu-BEST: different stages of maturity

A more advanced strand is the agreement on MediaMobil Communication reported on Monday. Under a capital increase, OHB secured 25% of the shares. According to the company, the partnership is meant to strengthen capabilities in satellite communications — a segment serving demanding environments. Unlike a pure exploration of possible cooperation, this is already a concrete equity arrangement.

Completed project work is also on the record. OHB Digital Connect reported on 22 October the finished construction and final acceptance of a test rig for engine and stage testing, backed by EUR 4.96 million in EU funding through the Eu-BEST programme. That demonstrates delivery capability, though it does not translate into a corresponding earnings contribution for OHB.

Investors should keep the stages apart. A letter of intent, an agreed stake purchase and a completed project each provide different levels of evidence, and they must not be treated as equivalent order announcements. In the favourable scenario the two initiatives complement each other: MediaMobil reinforces the intended communications capabilities while the Astroscale talks mature into joint services. That would mark qualitative progress beyond the mere announcement of new possibilities — without pre-empting commercial success.

The gap that carries the risk

The real exposure lies in the distance between strategic potential and economic execution. The market may already be ascribing a value to the Astroscale agreement that future contract terms would first have to justify. If matters rest at the exploration stage, commercial progress will be thinner than with an actual order. The MoU itself offers no basis for deriving a specific earnings contribution, and the MediaMobil arrangement should not be equated with assured profit growth either. The stated goal of stronger satellite communications capabilities is strategic in nature; whether economic benefits follow is a separate question.

A cautious assessment therefore rests not on rejecting these initiatives but on weighting their status cleanly. The completed test rig proves project execution — it substitutes neither for a future Astroscale contract nor for evidence of additional revenue from the equity stake.

12 November is the next checkpoint

The next hard date is 12 November, when OHB plans to publish its nine-month 2026 results together with a results presentation. That gives investors a chance to set the actual business performance alongside the new strategic ventures. The decisive test: can the existing business carry expectations while the new cooperations are still taking shape? The earnings release can supply a more solid foundation than the letter of intent alone. No economic impact from the latest agreements has been promised.
