OHB Notches Twin Launch Success as Europe's Orbital Ambitions Take Shape

A Falcon 9 lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Thursday carrying a dual payload that neatly captures where OHB SE stands today: one half commercial constellation work, the other publicly funded research. By the time the Transporter-18 rideshare mission reached orbit, the Bremen-based group had completed two missions in a single flight.
Eaglet II Wraps Ahead of Schedule
The launch placed eight more small satellites into orbit for OHB Italia, closing out the Eaglet II constellation built for Italy's IRIDE Earth-observation program. With this third batch, Eaglet II now fields its full complement of 24 mini-satellites in low Earth orbit. Combined with 15 additional spacecraft from the HEO mission, that brings the IRIDE program's total on-orbit tally to 39 satellites.
OHB Italia handled the entire cycle for Eaglet II — design, integration, testing and operations. ESA director Simonetta Cheli noted that the project wrapped up less than twelve months after its first launch and several months ahead of the schedule set by Italy's PNRR recovery and resilience plan.
Each satellite weighs roughly 25 kilograms and carries optical RGB sensors alongside receivers for the AIS maritime tracking system, relaying signals back to ground stations. The resulting Earth-observation data feeds primarily into environmental and coastal protection efforts, emergency response and critical-infrastructure monitoring. Further IRIDE contracts are already in the pipeline for the coming months, including work tied to the NIMBUS SAR radar mission.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?
ATHENE-1 Puts Security Tech to the Test
Riding the same rocket was ATHENE-1, a technology demonstrator weighing just under 300 kilograms. Built on the Triton-X Heavy platform from Luxembourg subsidiary OHB LuxSpace in partnership with the Universität der Bundeswehr München, the satellite forms the core of the SeRANIS research project, which has been running since 2020 with more than EUR 77 million in funding. OHB Orbital Access managed the launch campaign.
Designed for multi-year operation, ATHENE-1 will host 22 scientific experiments in orbit, with emphasis on software-defined systems, laser communications, IoT networking and AI-assisted data processing. Against a backdrop of mounting GPS interference in the Baltic region, the platform also serves to test methods for detecting, locating and countering electronic attacks on navigation signals. Mission control falls to the German Aerospace Center (DLR) facility in Oberpfaffenhofen.
ESA Studies Hand OHB a Seat at Europe's Table
Beyond its small-satellite work, OHB is pushing into larger infrastructure. On 29 September, ESA awarded contracts for parallel feasibility studies on a future European outpost in low Earth orbit, splitting the work between two industry consortia — one led by OHB, the other by Airbus Defence and Space. The concept studies, which began in June 2026 and run for roughly nine months, aim to define European capabilities for independent stations and modular platforms once the International Space Station retires. Leading one of the two consortia gives the Bremen group a central role in shaping the continent's next major space projects.
Analysts Raise the Bar Ahead of Q3
Sentiment on the equity side got a lift about a week ago when Deutsche Bank Research raised its price target to EUR 300 from EUR 275 after an investor event, keeping a Buy rating. German media reports also flagged that Berenberg reiterated its buy recommendation with a EUR 358 target. The company carries a market capitalization of EUR 3.53 billion.
Shares closed Friday at EUR 171.80, a modest 0.9% decline on the day, though the stock has still climbed 47% since the start of the year despite recent consolidation. The next hard data point arrives on 12 November 2026, when OHB publishes third-quarter and nine-month figures for 2026. The accompanying earnings call should reveal how the recent run of mission launches and project awards is translating into the group's financials.
