Nvidia's Political Discount: Why Two Versions of the Same Selloff Matter for Investors

A single trading session produced two different numbers for Nvidia's decline — and that discrepancy is a useful reminder of how fast-moving the story around the chipmaker has become. One report put the drop at 8.9%, the other at 8.4% as the session unfolded. Either way, the direction was the same: the stock was swept into a broad retreat across AI and semiconductor names, and the trigger was politics rather than earnings.

At the center of the selloff, according to Reuters, were Democratic gains in the US midterm elections. Investors began worrying that tighter oversight could slow or restrict the construction of data centers — the physical backbone on which future chip demand depends. AP framed the same anxiety around financing costs and the possibility of government-ordered construction pauses following the elections. Both accounts describe investor fears, not measures that have actually been enacted.

Permits, Not Products

That distinction matters. Nvidia's growth case rests not only on selling chips but on whether the infrastructure to house them can be built on schedule. If data-center projects slip, the demand curve for AI processors bends with them. The repricing seen in the session was aimed squarely at expectations for the build-out, which is why the political calendar suddenly carries as much weight as the product roadmap.

A notable data point arrived earlier in the week from Melius Research. Analyst Ben Reitzes cut his price target to $315 from $420 on Monday, according to media reports, while keeping his buy rating intact. The combination reads as cautious optimism rather than a change of heart: the positive call survives, but with less headroom built into it. For investors, that tension is more informative than the rating alone.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Huang Called to Capitol Hill

Alongside the infrastructure debate, Washington is demanding answers on a separate front. Republican committee chairs in the US House of Representatives have asked Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang to appear for a closed-door briefing on 18 November, Reuters reported. The session is set to cover a report about his alleged relationship with a businesswoman, as well as Nvidia's security arrangements. The woman is under investigation on suspicion of espionage with China links.

Nvidia's response was that Huang speaks with thousands of customer executives. Asian cloud customers, the company said, receive ordinary business information — not sensitive trade secrets or US national security material.

A Breach, and a Date to Circle

Security questions extend beyond Capitol Hill. Reports dated 30 October said a breach at Brev, Nvidia's cloud development platform, may have exposed customer information and SSH keys — the credentials used to access customers' virtual machines. Nvidia said the affected keys were swapped out and that it found no evidence of misuse. The reported unauthorized activity ran from 4 to 20 October. Potential data access and the unproven misuse are separate threads of the same incident.

Meanwhile, the company has scheduled a conference call for 17 November 2026 to discuss results for the third quarter of fiscal 2027. That quarter closed on 25 October 2026.

Taken together, the political dimension now belongs in any valuation of Nvidia — to the extent that it touches investment projects or business relationships. The selloff demonstrated how sensitive shareholders are to anything that might obstruct the AI build-out. What decides the growth story is execution: continued data-center construction argues for it, while actual delays would argue against. That condition is the yardstick by which the optimism must be measured.
