Nvidia's Packaging Billions Put the Supply Chain, Not the Tape, Under the Microscope

Nvidia shares rose 3.2% yesterday, carried by a broader recovery in semiconductor stocks after a sharp selloff in the AI sector. Reuters traced Thursday's selling pressure to worries that a Democrat-led Congress could impose stricter AI rules and slow data-center construction — fears about possible regulatory fallout from the election results, not about any rules already on the books.

For all the noise around that move, the more consequential development sits further down the supply chain. According to Reuters, Nvidia is committing billions of dollars to expand advanced CoWoS packaging capacity at Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL), a unit of ASE Technology. A industry manager cited by Reuters said the money will fund new factory space and equipment.

A Different Kind of AI Wager

That is a bet of a different character than simply assuming ever-larger data centers. Nvidia is underwriting one specific manufacturing step, which shifts the question investors should be asking: beyond demand for computing power, can the capacity needed to deliver it come online in time?

The financing signals Nvidia's willingness to shape the preconditions of its own business rather than wait on them. Its economic value, though, hinges on whether customers actually take up the products that result. New floors and tools have to prove themselves in day-to-day operations — which is why this deserves more attention than a bare capacity announcement.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Options Are Not Orders

How carefully to separate signed agreements from possible expansions is illustrated by a separate Reuters report on Thursday: Microsoft will not exercise an option to more than double its agreement with AI cloud provider Nscale, covering computing capacity at a Texas data center. The existing expanded arrangement already covers roughly 200,000 Nvidia AI chips, so a substantial committed volume remains even without the additional build-out.

For anyone assessing the capacity expansion, both sides of the ledger matter — the size of existing agreements and customers' appetite for further commitments. An option creates a possibility; only exercising it turns that into an actual additional contract. Judging Nvidia's factory financing therefore requires just as close a watch on the customer side.

Software Layer Widens

Meanwhile, the application layer is broadening. Box announced Thursday a deepened collaboration with Nvidia, including Box Context Retrieval with Nvidia Nemotron models and tools for AI workflows. General availability for customers of Enterprise Advanced is slated for early next year. That adds a concrete use case to the industrial build-out — a link between infrastructure and software deployment that pays off for Nvidia only if the announced tools find their way into customer operations.

Regulatory questions, too, remain in the picture. Reuters reported on 28 October that the US Department of Justice has inquired about the competitive effects of Nvidia's planned acquisition of Hugging Face, a deal carrying a $12.93 billion price tag. Closing is expected in the first half of 2027 but is subject to regulatory approvals, with Nvidia as buyer and Hugging Face the target.

Oracle, Substrates and a November Date

On the operations front, Nvidia and Oracle said on 27 October they would expand Oracle Cloud Infrastructure's superclusters using Nvidia Vera Rubin systems at a scale of multiple gigawatts. According to the companies, Vera Rubin NVL72 systems and Vera CPUs were already generally available on OCI. Earlier, on 21 October, Nvidia and partners announced supply-chain capacity expansions spanning substrates, packaging, testing and optical components; Nvidia said it would advance King Yuan Electronics $1.1 billion to reserve capacity.

All of it funnels into a single appointment: on 17 November 2026, Nvidia will report results for the third quarter of fiscal 2027, a period that ended on 25 October, and discuss them on a conference call. That date bundles the investor question behind the individual headlines — how well added manufacturing capacity, existing customer agreements and new applications fit together. Yesterday's sector recovery provides a tailwind; confidence becomes more durable when the financed expansion shows up in the business itself.
