Nvidia's $3 Billion Bet on Meta Comes With a Washington Asterisk

Nvidia rose 3.6% on renewed AI buying, but data center financing costs and political risk remain key tests ahead of Nov 17 earnings.

Nvidia shares climbed 3.6% today, the strongest single contributor to the S&P 500, as buyers returned to AI and semiconductor names following two sessions of sharp losses. The rebound is welcome. Whether it holds is a separate question, and the answer sits less with chip performance than with the cost of financing data centers and the politics surrounding them.

That tension is the real story behind the ticker. Nvidia is pushing AI infrastructure forward with heavyweight partners, even as political risk reshapes how that buildout gets valued.

The rebound, and what drove the selloff

AP attributed the prior two days of sector-wide declines to worries about data center spending, credit costs, and possible political restrictions on construction. Reuters tied the selloff to concerns that Democratic election gains could bring stricter AI rules and a slower buildout. Those are questions about the terms on which infrastructure can grow, not about the chips themselves.

The broad participation in today's recovery is encouraging, provided the worries about investment conditions ease alongside it. A sector-wide rally can give Nvidia a tailwind. The same link to the industry will weigh on the stock as long as higher financing costs and political intervention pressure expectations for data center expansion.

Partners put numbers behind the expansion

On October 27, Nvidia and Oracle announced plans to scale Oracle Cloud Infrastructure superclusters to multi-gigawatt size using Vera Rubin NVL72 systems. Those systems and Vera processors also became generally available on the platform the same day, pairing a concrete availability milestone with a far larger expansion plan.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

The widened Meta collaboration, announced the same day, follows the same logic. Meta intends a broader deployment of Vera Rubin, Vera processors, and Nvidia's networking and infrastructure technology. Work around the Muse model family targets gains in training and inference. Nvidia also said it will invest $3 billion in Meta's equity offering.

Technical cooperation and financial commitment reinforce each other here. The partnership gains weight for Nvidia if Meta expands the planned deployment, while Nvidia is tying up its own capital in the relationship. Investors should watch both the product business and the announced stake.

China exposure and a date to circle

Expansion also raises the question of which customer relationships remain politically viable. Reuters reported Tuesday, citing the Financial Times, that Nvidia is asking data center partners to reduce their dependence on Chinese customers. Reuters could not independently confirm the report.

If confirmed, it would signal how strongly geopolitical requirements shape the business. The partnerships would then be valued partly on where, and under what conditions, their capacity can be used.

The next fixed marker for putting numbers to all this is November 17, when Nvidia has scheduled its earnings conference for the third quarter of fiscal 2027. The quarter ended October 25.

A lower bar, not a lower opinion

How closely optimism and valuation pressure sit together showed up Monday. Melius Research cut its Nvidia price target to $315 from $420 while keeping a buy rating, according to media reports, citing falling valuation multiples across the sector and the funding needs of large technology companies.

That combination is the key valuation gauge for this rebound: a positive view of the company can coexist with markedly more conservative price expectations. The confirmed buy rating supports Nvidia if underlying expectations are met despite financing pressure.

Net, cautious optimism prevails as long as today's buying is matched by calmer conditions on financing and regulation. The decisive test remains willingness to invest under those conditions. A durably friendlier valuation would convince once investors can again calculate the AI infrastructure buildout with greater confidence.
