Novo Nordisk Staff Huddle Sets Stage for London Strategy Day as Buybacks Roll On

Novo Nordisk holds an internal town hall before its 21 September London capital markets day, as Morgan Stanley downgrades the stock on patent-cliff concerns.

Novo Nordisk is gathering employees for an internal town hall on Tuesday, with Bloomberg reporting that the meeting will centre on the next phase of the company's development. The session lands just ahead of its capital markets day in London on 21 September, where management intends to lay out its longer-term direction in detail.

Shares slipped 1.8% to EUR 37.05 in today's trading.

The staff briefing follows a deliberate sharpening of the company's public face. The Danish drugmaker said yesterday it will operate under the shortened name Novo in day-to-day business, paired with the tagline "Lasting Health Starts Now." The formal corporate name, Novo Nordisk A/S, and the traditional Apis bull logo are both being retained.

Clinical Momentum Behind Semaglutide

On the science side, Novo Nordisk is pushing hard to widen the uses of its flagship active ingredient, semaglutide. On 7 September the group reported positive late-stage results from the STEP Young trial in obese primary-school-aged children. Among participants treated with the drug, 40.4% brought their body weight below the obesity threshold, while not a single subject in the control arm reached that mark.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

The study therefore met its primary endpoint. According to the company, no new safety concerns emerged regarding growth or pubertal development, putting the profile in line with what has been observed in adults. Full data are due to be presented in mid-November at the ObesityWeek specialist conference in Washington.

Morgan Stanley Flags the Patent Cliff

Even with those clinical gains, some analysts are turning more cautious on the medium-term outlook. Last Friday Morgan Stanley downgraded the stock to "Underweight," citing subdued growth expectations and the approaching patent expiries on its lead product.

Semaglutide currently accounts for roughly three-quarters of group revenue and dominates the operating business. Morgan Stanley expects that share to fall to 59% by 2031, before patent protection lapses in the first half of the next decade. Through 2030, the analysts project annual growth of just 4%.

That looming erosion is forcing management to open up new business areas and broaden the existing product range. Investors will accordingly be watching closely for how the company addresses the patent cliff in London.

Buyback Programme Underpins the Capital Structure

Alongside its operational agenda, Novo Nordisk continues to lean on large-scale capital measures to support its valuation. In an update published yesterday, the company disclosed it has bought back more than 33 million of its own B shares since the start of February, for a total volume exceeding DKK 9.3 billion.

Novo Nordisk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

As of the most recent reporting date, the group held 47,124,876 own B shares, equal to 1.1% of total share capital. The repurchases form part of a twelve-month framework programme. Steady buybacks shrink the free float and lift calculated earnings per share, while signalling the board's confidence in the balance sheet — though such measures cannot by themselves resolve structural growth questions in the core business.

The stock has shown little response to the recent news flow. Today's decline of 1.3% to EUR 37.23 extends the year-to-date loss to 15%.

Next Date on the Calendar

One further fixture is already set. On 4 November 2026, management will publish third-quarter figures. Until then, market participants will keep their focus trained on the strategic signals emerging from the London conference.
