Novo Nordisk spotlights CagriSema and Ozempic data at EASD 2026, adds a Hengrui pipeline deal, while FDA extends its Denecimig review.

Fresh clinical readouts are reshaping the investment case for Novo Nordisk, with the Danish drugmaker using this year's European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting to showcase data across its obesity and diabetes franchise.

Headlining the disclosures was CagriSema, the company's experimental combination therapy. In a 52-week fMRI study, participants on the drug achieved a 22.4% reduction in body weight versus placebo. Functional imaging also revealed a marked dampening of hunger signals — the phenomenon known as "food noise" — alongside favorable effects on organ and bone health markers and a decline in organ fat.

Wegovy's Metabolic Reach Extends to the Liver

Novo Nordisk rounded out the obesity narrative on October 1 with an exploratory post-hoc analysis drawn from a subgroup of the STEP-UP trial. The study focused on adults with obesity and elevated baseline liver fat. After 72 weeks of treatment, liver fat levels returned to the normal range of below 5% in 23 of 26 participants.

The finding underscores a therapeutic potential that stretches beyond weight reduction alone. For Novo Nordisk, such metabolic effects represent a key plank in defending its scientific leadership against rivals in the fiercely contested incretin market.

Ozempic Holds Cardiovascular Edge Over Mounjaro

Competitive positioning was also on display. On September 29, the company presented a real-world analysis at EASD pitting Ozempic directly against Eli Lilly's rival product. Among adults with type 2 diabetes, administering two milligrams of semaglutide was associated with a lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events than switching to tirzepatide, marketed as Mounjaro.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

The study hands the Danes a valuable argument in the market for incretin mimetics. Novo Nordisk is locked in a direct duel with its US rival in the GLP-1 receptor agonist segment, where Lilly's tirzepatide engages additional receptors. Real-world treatment data bolsters the cardiovascular profile of Ozempic, a central pillar of the company's diabetes business.

Hengrui Deal Adds Pipeline Depth

To broaden its product portfolio over the medium term, the group is leaning on external partnerships. Roughly two weeks ago, Novo Nordisk secured worldwide exclusive rights to HRS-1596, a drug candidate from Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals. The agreement carries a $300 million upfront payment, with the maximum total value — including milestone payments and royalties — reaching as much as $2.6 billion.

FDA Extends Denecimig Review

Those advances sit alongside operational delays elsewhere. For Denecimig, a hemophilia A candidate, the US Food and Drug Administration extended its review because remediation work is underway at a manufacturing site. The agency did not identify any clinical deficiencies regarding efficacy or safety. Novo Nordisk is targeting a US launch in the first half of 2027, subject to approval, and said the delay has no impact on its financial outlook for 2026.

Long-Term Ambitions Meet Investor Caution

Management laid out its long-range objectives at a capital markets day in London roughly three weeks ago. The company is aiming for revenue growth through 2030 in line with that of the major pharmaceutical peers. According to Reuters, investor reservations voiced at the event regarding pricing power and M&A strategy weighed on sentiment.

Market participants are currently weighing solid study data against regulatory delays and long-term margin prospects. In Friday trading, Novo Nordisk shares rose 0.9% to EUR 34.26.

The stock closed at EUR 34.40 on Friday, and despite the recent clinical successes, the valuation reflects the challenges of the year so far: year-to-date, the shares are down 22%. The title thus remains well below its 52-week high of EUR 54.86.
