Novo Nordisk's Buyback Passes 10.5 Billion DKK as Lilly's Obesity Pill Wins EMA Backing
Published on 10/16/2026 at 20:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deNovo Nordisk is pressing ahead with one of the more aggressive capital-return programmes in European pharma, even as the ground shifts beneath its core obesity franchise. The Danish drugmaker has repurchased 23,090,000 B-shares for DKK 6,758,876,433 under a tranche launched on 6 May, bringing the cumulative total since 4 February to DKK 10,558,876,422.
That figure represents roughly two-thirds of the DKK 15 billion envelope the company set aside for the twelve-month programme that began on 4 February 2026. The current tranche, running from 6 May to 1 February, is capped at DKK 11,200,000,010.45. Management is executing the purchases on the open market, a familiar playbook for returning surplus capital to shareholders while continuing to fund production sites and research.
A Regulatory Win for the Competition
The buyback news lands alongside a less welcome development. An advisory committee of the European Medicines Agency has recommended approval of an obesity pill from US rival Eli Lilly, according to a Reuters report. The endorsement hands Lilly a regulatory milestone in Europe and intensifies pressure on Novo Nordisk in the very indication that has driven its growth for years.
Defending market share in obesity treatments now looks like the defining task of the coming quarters, with the company's pipeline progress running in parallel.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?
Denecimig Slips, but Data Hold Up
On the pipeline front, Novo Nordisk is navigating a delay at the US Food and Drug Administration. The agency has extended its review of Denecimig, the company's haemophilia A candidate, because remedial work at a manufacturing facility is still ongoing.
Notably, the FDA raised no concerns about the submitted clinical data on efficacy or safety, according to the company. No revised decision date has been provided. Novo Nordisk still aims to launch Denecimig in the United States in the first half of 2027, assuming approval comes through, and has said the setback leaves its 2026 financial guidance untouched.
India as the Next Growth Engine
While Washington moves slowly, the company is betting on Asia for volume growth. Vikrant Shrotriya, managing director of Novo Nordisk India, said the company expects the country's GLP-1 market to expand by 15% to 20% annually. Novo Nordisk plans to introduce an oral obesity therapy there around mid-2027, alongside a higher-dose version of semaglutide.
Novo Nordisk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Analysts Trim Targets, Keep Neutral Stance
Sell-side views have shifted modestly rather than dramatically. BMO Capital cut its price target to $40 from $47 on Monday while maintaining a "Market Perform" rating. Citi had already reduced its target to DKK 296 from DKK 310 on 9 October, keeping a "Neutral" verdict. Both moves amount to measured valuation adjustments, with neither house altering its essentially neutral posture on the stock.
Shares Under Pressure
The market has taken a cautious view of the mixed flow of news and rising competition. Novo Nordisk shares changed hands at EUR 34.68 on Friday, down 0.9% on the day. The stock has lost 21% since the start of the year, extending a downtrend that has run for months and leaving capital-return measures as a key reference point for investors.
