Novo Nordisk's Buyback Hits 10.2 Billion DKK as FDA Stalls Denecimig and Hengrui Deal Awaits Q4 Close

Novo Nordisk has spent 10.25 billion DKK on its buyback as shares fall 22% this year, with US GLP-1 competition and an FDA delay weighing on the stock.

Novo Nordisk has now channeled 10,247,270,869 DKK into its own shares under a repurchase program authorized to spend up to 15 billion DKK, a figure that had already reached roughly 9.94 billion DKK by the end of September. The buyback continues to unfold against a difficult stretch for the Danish drugmaker's equity, which closed Monday at EUR 34.56 and has shed 22 percent since the start of the year.

That slide leaves the stock trading 12 percent beneath its 200-day moving average of EUR 39.29, and it has pushed the company's market capitalization to EUR 150.27 billion. Management's capital-return effort is clearly aimed at putting a floor under the shares, yet the broader narrative has shifted toward a single question: can Novo Nordisk defend its leadership in GLP-1 therapies on the world's most lucrative pharmaceutical market?

A Tougher Fight for US Prescriptions

Nothing matters more to the investment case than prescription trends for established blockbusters such as Ozempic and Wegovy. Rival products are gaining ground in the United States, and analysts are watching closely whether the company can sustain volume growth in the face of pricing pressure. Every point of US market share lost in this high-margin segment carries outsized weight. At the same time, the scientific contest is moving toward next-generation compounds and combination treatments, where technological leadership in metabolic disease translates directly into future revenue.

BMO Capital's Evan Seigerman cut his price target to $40 from $47 while keeping a Market Perform rating, pointing to eroding US share and a demanding year-over-year comparison for Ozempic. Citi also trimmed its target, lowering it to 296 DKK and maintaining a Neutral stance.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Regulatory Snag in Hemophilia

Washington has added its own complication. Roughly two weeks ago, Novo Nordisk disclosed that the FDA extended its review of Denecimig for hemophilia A. The delay stems from remediation work needed at a manufacturing facility; no deficiencies were found in the clinical data. The agency has not yet provided a new decision timeline. Novo Nordisk is targeting a US launch of Denecimig in the first half of 2027, subject to approval, and says its financial guidance for 2026 remains untouched. Even so, the episode underscores how tightly supply chains and production processes are bound to strict regulatory requirements. Since the extension became public, the shares have gained 4.5 percent.

Pipeline Bets: Hengrui and Clinical Data

On the development front, Novo Nordisk moved at the end of September to secure an exclusive licensing agreement with Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals for HRS-1596, an oral dual GLP-1/GIP agonist that is once-weekly dosed and currently pre-Phase 1. The deal grants worldwide rights outside mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, and carries a $300 million upfront payment alongside potential milestone and royalty payments worth up to $2.6 billion in total. Closing is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. Such partnerships reinforce the pipeline in tablet formulations and cushion the risk should any internal program stall.

Existing products are also delivering. An analysis of the STEP-UP trial found that Wegovy returned elevated liver fat to normal ranges in 88.5 percent of participants. Separately, a study of 636,525 adults with type 2 diabetes showed that raising the semaglutide dose to 2 milligrams was associated with a 6 percent lower risk of major cardiovascular events than switching to tirzepatide.

What the Third Quarter Must Prove

Attention now turns to the third-quarter 2026 report, the next hard catalyst on the calendar. Holding the EUR 34.34 level would suggest the multi-billion-krone buyback is establishing a dependable floor; losing it could extend the downtrend, particularly if margin pressure persists or US share losses deepen. A weaker-than-hoped quarter would validate the caution voiced by analysts. Until those figures land, the mood around the stock is likely to stay jittery, with investors weighing pipeline wins against the drag in the US core business.
