Novo Nordisk Rebrands as Novo While Buybacks and Paediatric Data Offset Semaglutide Patent Fears

Novo Nordisk will shorten its trading identity to simply "Novo" in day-to-day operations, the Danish drugmaker said Monday, keeping the full legal name Novo Nordisk A/S intact. The rebrand, packaged under the tagline "Lasting Health Starts Now," is designed to signal the opening of a new chapter — and it lands just ahead of a capital markets day in London on 21 September, where management will lay out a revamped corporate strategy in detail.
The timing is telling. After months in which one of Europe's former stock market darlings has lost ground, the name change is meant to serve as a symbol of the strategic reset about to be unveiled.
Shares Still Under the Weather
Investors have so far shrugged at the announcement. The stock trades at EUR 37.12, down 16% since the start of the year and 23% over twelve months. Measured against the 52-week high of EUR 54.86 set in January, the shares have given up 32%. An RSI reading of 37.4 points to a weak — though not oversold — market position.
Weighing on the equity is an ongoing debate over the company's medium-term growth prospects, centred on the patent expiry for semaglutide, the molecule behind Ozempic and Wegovy. Morgan Stanley added fuel to that fire last Friday with a more sceptical reassessment, a downgrade that is still reverberating through sentiment. According to the bank, semaglutide accounts for roughly 75% of this year's sales, which explains why questions about life after 2031 — when patent protection lapses — carry such weight.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?
Buyback Machine Keeps Rolling
Against that backdrop, Novo Nordisk is pressing ahead with its share repurchase programme. Since 4 February, the group has bought back 33,084,179 B-shares at an average price of DKK 281.89 apiece, a transaction volume of around DKK 9.3 billion. The company now holds 47,124,876 of its own B-shares as treasury stock, equivalent to 1.1% of share capital.
The current tranche, worth up to DKK 11.2 billion, runs until 1 February 2027 and forms part of a broader DKK 15 billion framework launched in February. A programme of that size suggests management views the balance sheet as comfortably solid and wants to signal confidence in its own valuation — particularly with the stock trading roughly 33% below its late-January peak, where buybacks at depressed prices carry extra punch. For shareholders, though, the signal cuts both ways: repurchases theoretically support the price, yet they have not managed to halt the slide of recent months.
A Paediatric Bright Spot
Away from the strategy debate, the pipeline delivered some good news. The Phase 3 STEP Young trial showed that once-weekly semaglutide reduced body mass index substantially in 40.4% of overweight children after 68 weeks. Among participants aged six to under twelve, 40.4% were no longer classified as obese at the 68-week mark, against zero percent in the placebo arm.
The study met its primary endpoint without throwing up new safety concerns, including on growth or pubertal development. Full results are due to be presented in November at the ObesityWeek conference in Washington. Data of this kind could open up new patient populations over the medium term, broadening the growth base beyond established indications.
What the Rebrand Actually Changes
Under the new identity, the company will also roll out a corporate culture programme dubbed "The Novo Way." The legal structure as Novo Nordisk A/S remains untouched, and the logo featuring the Apis bull is being modernised rather than replaced. The aim is to sharpen recognition in the core diabetes and obesity markets — whether it also wins back investor confidence will only become clear at the London gathering.
That event now looms as the next real test, with the 4 November quarterly figures close behind. Until then, the shares look set to stay caught between operational progress and structural worries about the future.
