Novo Nordisk Pushes Emerging-Market Access as Reimbursement Wins Meet US Share Erosion

Novo Nordisk is betting that emerging markets can pick up the slack for its GLP-1 franchise, with its Indian arm projecting annual growth of 15% to 20% for that country's GLP-1 market. The Danish drugmaker intends to ride that demand by launching a higher-dose version of semaglutide and an oral obesity treatment in India around mid-2027 — both explicitly contingent on regulatory approval.

The move opens growth avenues beyond the company's Western core markets, aimed at securing early therapeutic access for patients with type-2 diabetes and excess weight in the world's most populous country and establishing a foothold in its care network.

Reimbursement momentum is building in Europe as well. Ireland's National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics has recommended that the HSE make Wegovy available to eligible patients within the public health system under defined clinical criteria. A corresponding assessment puts the cost to the state budget at roughly EUR 4.4 billion over five years if the eligible population takes up the treatment in full. For Novo Nordisk, the opinion marks a significant step toward embedding access to its GLP-1 therapy through state reimbursement schemes on further European markets — a shift from the current reality in many countries, where patients largely foot the bill for modern weight-loss drugs themselves. Public coverage would open the door to broader patient groups, though the billions involved raise substantial financing questions for health systems.

Asia is moving in parallel. Novo Nordisk's South Korean subsidiary filed a formal application with the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service on Monday to have Wegovy added to the national health insurance benefit list.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Competition, meanwhile, is heating up. A European Medicines Agency expert committee has recommended approval of Foundayo, the weight-loss pill from US rival Eli Lilly, according to Reuters. That makes it the second oral obesity medicine to win the European panel's backing, following Novo Nordisk's Wegovy tablet.

US Pressure and a Pipeline Delay

Set against those access wins are clear challenges in the US, Novo Nordisk's most important market. On October 12, BMO Capital cut its price target on the stock to $40 from $47 while keeping a "Market Perform" rating. The brokerage cited declining US market shares and a tough year-earlier comparison base, factors it expects to weigh on sales of the diabetes drug Ozempic in the third quarter of 2026.

Patience is also required outside the metabolic space. On October 2, Novo Nordisk disclosed that the FDA has extended its review of denecimig, a hemophilia A candidate, after remediation work at a manufacturing site. The agency set no new decision date but raised no concerns about clinical efficacy or the submitted safety data. The company said the delay has no impact on its full-year 2026 financial outlook.

Analysts Hold Fire Ahead of the Quarterly Update

Caution dominates on the analyst side. Matthew Weston of UBS reaffirmed his neutral rating on Wednesday with a price target of 332 Danish kroner. Investors will get fresh insight into operating trends shortly: Novo Nordisk publishes financial data for the first three quarters of 2026 on November 4 at 07:30 CET.

The shares closed Friday at EUR 34.49, down 1.4% on the day and 22% lower since the start of the year, as competitive pressure and the reimbursement debate keep the stock in consolidation.
