Novo Nordisk has moved up the international launch schedule for its Wegovy tablet, telling Reuters it now intends to reach more than 20 countries by mid-2027 rather than the end of that year. The acceleration lands alongside an upgraded full-year outlook and a fresh batch of third-quarter figures — but also against a share price that slipped 3.3% on the day, a reminder that a faster rollout is not the same thing as a warmer reception.

A tablet that already pays its way

The compressed timeline builds on a driver the Danish drugmaker has cited before. When Novo Nordisk lifted its annual guidance yesterday, it pointed to demand for GLP-1 medicines and to the Wegovy pill's arrival on the market as reasons. The tablet, in other words, is no longer just a pipeline promise; management says it is already contributing to the business.

That contribution has a number attached. Sales of the Wegovy pill came to DKK 5.39 billion in the quarter, part of a group top line of DKK 79,195 million — or roughly DKK 79.2 billion — which represented growth of 4% at constant exchange rates. Adjusted operating profit reached DKK 31,720 million, up 27% on the same currency-neutral basis.

The company credited that performance to volume growth in GLP-1 products, obesity treatments above all. For investors, the question now shifts: alongside demand, execution of the launches themselves is moving to centre stage.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Brazil draws the boundary line

Expansion has a counterweight, and it showed up in Brazil. CEO Mike Doustdar told Reuters yesterday that the expiry of the semaglutide patent is costing Novo Nordisk market share in the country.

He was careful to draw distinctions. In Canada and India, he said, the company has largely held its ground. The picture is therefore regional rather than uniform — a point that matters when weighing the faster launch plan, since rolling out new products and defending existing positions are two separate jobs. A mid-2027 timetable says nothing on its own about how individual markets will fare.

Guidance with room for a decline

The upgraded forecast is broader than a headline number suggests. For adjusted sales and adjusted operating profit in 2026, Novo Nordisk now expects a currency-neutral range of -2% to +2%, improved from an earlier -6% to flat. The band still leaves room for contraction as well as growth.

Group-level growth in the third quarter came despite the emerging-market pressure described above — regional weakness did not define the whole revenue picture. Even so, expansion and patent erosion are running side by side at Novo Nordisk, and the guidance captures both.

Washington sets the next test

Attention now turns to ObesityWeek in Washington, scheduled for 14–17 November. Novo Nordisk announced on 29 October that it will present 26 abstracts from its obesity portfolio, with data on CagriSema and Wegovy among the programme.

The congress is not a regulatory milestone, and the value on offer is different in kind: it may sharpen the picture of the products and their prospects. Whether that translates into a stronger case for the stock depends on what the presentations actually contain.

The yardstick remains whether higher volumes can keep feeding through to earnings. Scientific results and commercial performance sit on different planes — a compelling abstract would not by itself prove that recent profit growth will persist. Should the data reinforce the portfolio's outlook, confidence could rest on more than a single quarter's trading. Should they add little, the reported business carries expectations for now.

Analysts hold, and the CFO heads for the exit

Several analyst houses reportedly reiterated their hold ratings yesterday, with price targets spanning DKK 275 to DKK 350, according to media reports. The guidance raise did not, in these cases, translate into a more favourable recommendation.

Separately, Novo Nordisk said yesterday that finance chief Karsten Munk Knudsen will leave the company at the end of 2026. Luigi La Corte, currently CFO of Galderma, is lined up to succeed him. The handover bears on financial stewardship and communication going forward; on its own it signals neither a deterioration nor an improvement in operations, and it should not be conflated with the question of product strength.

For now, as long as volume growth underpins earnings, a more favourable scenario remains defensible. The 14–17 November gathering is the next concrete catalyst — and it is the substance of the abstracts, not their count, that will decide how much they add.
