Novo Nordisk has now spent more than 10.55 billion Danish kroner buying back its own B-shares, pushing its 12-month programme close to the 15 billion DKK ceiling it set out for the scheme launched on 4 February 2026. The cumulative tally as of 9 October stands at 37,849,179 shares. The latest tranche alone accounted for 23,090,000 shares acquired for roughly 6.76 billion DKK.

Management frames the repurchase drive as a way of safeguarding long-term value for shareholders. Investors, however, have been slow to reward it. The stock closed Friday's European session at EUR 34.49, down 1.4% on the day, and sits 22% lower since the start of the year — a long way from its 52-week peak of EUR 54.86.

CHMP Backs Broader Kyinsu Label

Regulatory news offered a modest counterweight. The European Medicines Agency's Committee for Human Medicinal Products (CHMP) issued a positive opinion on Friday for a wider indication of Kyinsu, covering adults with type-2 diabetes whose blood sugar remains inadequately controlled on oral antidiabetics. The committee's endorsement follows a review of the submitted efficacy data. One formal step remains: confirmation by the European Commission, which has yet to rule, before the expanded label can reach patients across member states.

The broader sector has been under pressure for months, squeezed by intensifying competition in diabetes and obesity care and by regulatory adjustments. That backdrop explains much of the year-to-date decline in Novo Nordisk's shares.

Broker Targets Trimmed on Ozempic Base Effects

Two brokerage moves this month point to caution on the near-term earnings trajectory. On 12 October, BMO Capital cut its price target to $40 from $47 while keeping a "Market Perform" rating, citing short-term obstacles from a demanding comparison base in US Ozempic revenues. A gross-to-net adjustment worth more than 2 billion DKK weighed on last year's sales, a distortion likely to make the third-quarter 2026 decline look steeper than the underlying trend.

Citi had already acted on 9 October, lowering its target to 296 DKK from 310 DKK and reaffirming a neutral stance. The US bank sees margins broadly stable through 2030 but trimmed its adjusted operating profit estimates for 2028 to 2030 by between 2% and 4%. The read-across for the GLP-1 franchise is a more guarded view of medium-term momentum, shaped by US accounting effects, a normalisation of demand growth and mounting competition.

India Filing, Hemophilia Delay, Counterfeit Warning

On the pipeline front, Novo Nordisk has lodged applications in India for higher-dose semaglutide and for oral semaglutide against obesity. Managing Director Vikrant Shrotriya, according to media reports, expects the country's GLP-1 market to grow 15% to 20% annually, with a launch of the oral therapy targeted for mid-2027, subject to approvals. The company also threw its weight behind India's goal of eliminating sickle cell disease as a public health problem by 2047, focusing on early detection, awareness and wider access to treatment.

In the US, the FDA's review of Denecimig for haemophilia A is still running. The holdup stems from remediation work at a manufacturing site; the agency raised no concerns over clinical efficacy or safety data. Novo Nordisk is aiming for a US launch in the first half of 2027 if clearance comes through, and says the delay does not affect its financial outlook for 2026.

Separately, Novo Nordisk warned on Saturday that thousands of insulin pens stolen from a Dutch wholesaler could be resold illegally as weight-loss injections — a misuse carrying serious health risks. The company said it has put safeguards in place to prevent a repeat. On the philanthropic side, the Novo Nordisk Foundation committed a further $53 million on 1 October to research into the genetic mechanisms of obesity and type-2 diabetes at the Broad Institute.

November 4 in the Diary

Concrete operating figures arrive shortly. Novo Nordisk will publish results for the first three quarters of 2026 on 4 November at 07:30 CET, giving investors their first hard read on how the US revenue base effects and the competitive squeeze are feeding through to the bottom line.
