Novo Nordisk will report third-quarter 2026 results on November 4 at 07:30 CET, a print investors are treating as a referendum on how well the Danish drugmaker's core franchise is holding up against mounting competition in obesity care and a shifting reimbursement landscape.

Ahead of the release, the shares changed hands at EUR 34.59 pre-market, down 21% year to date and 37% below their 52-week high of EUR 54.86. The stock closed Friday's European session at EUR 34.49, a decline of 1.4% on the day, with the wider diabetes and obesity sector weighed down in recent months by intensifying competition and regulatory adjustments.

Lilly's Oral Pill Clears EMA Hurdle

Competitive pressure on Novo's home turf looks set to intensify. The European Medicines Agency's committee recommended approval on Friday last week for Foundayo, the oral obesity drug from US rival Eli Lilly, according to Reuters. Foundayo becomes the second oral anti-obesity medicine to win the agency's backing, following Novo Nordisk's own Wegovy pill — setting the stage for two tablet-based offerings to battle for market share.

Novo, for its part, is pressing ahead with a separate European filing. The EMA's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) issued a positive opinion on Friday for a broader indication of Kyinsu in adults with type-2 diabetes whose blood sugar remains inadequately controlled on oral antidiabetics. A formal green light from the European Commission is still pending before the expanded label can reach member-state markets.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Buyback Tally Tops 10.5 Billion DKK

Alongside its commercial push, the company continues to return capital to shareholders. As of October 9, Novo had repurchased 37,849,179 B-shares since the programme began on February 4, at a total cost of DKK 10,558,876,422. The current tranche alone accounted for 23,090,000 shares bought for roughly DKK 6.76 billion. The overall buyback is capped at DKK 15 billion.

Brokerage opinion heading into the quarterly update is split. UBS reaffirmed a "Neutral" rating last Wednesday with a price target of DKK 332. BMO Capital, on the Monday of the prior week, trimmed its target to $40 from $47 while keeping a "Market Perform" stance.

Asia Push and a Pending FDA Call

On the commercial front, Novo Nordisk Korea lodged an application with the country's Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) on Monday of last week, seeking reimbursement for Wegovy through the national health insurance scheme — a key lever for unlocking larger patient pools across Asia.

In India, Managing Director Vikrant Shrotriya has flagged annual growth of 15% to 20% in the GLP-1 segment, according to media reports. Filings have gone in for higher-dose semaglutide and for oral semaglutide in obesity, with a launch of the tablet therapy targeted for mid-2027, subject to approvals.

One piece of the pipeline remains unresolved. The US Food and Drug Administration's review of Denecimig for haemophilia A is still running, held up by remediation work at a manufacturing site rather than any deficiency in clinical efficacy or safety data, the agency found. Novo is aiming for a US launch in the first half of 2027 if cleared, and says the delay does not affect its 2026 financial outlook.
