Danish watchdog flags four Novo Nordisk breaches, three over LinkedIn weight-loss promotions, as buyback nears its DKK 15bn cap and FDA extends Denecimig review.

Danish regulators have flagged four breaches by Novo Nordisk this year, with three of them tied to promotions for weight-loss medicines on LinkedIn that the Danish Medicines Agency said were aimed squarely at consumers. The criticism lands as the company's home-market watchdog keeps a close watch on the fast-expanding obesity treatment sector, where prescription-only products carry especially tight rules on direct-to-patient communication.

The reprimand follows a separate rebuke on 25 September, when the Danish pharmaceutical industry's ethics committee fined Novo Nordisk 45,000 DKK over a tie-up with service provider Falck under a weight-loss programme. The committee ordered the project halted in its then-current form.

Buyback Programme Approaches Its Limit

Details released on 5 October on the share repurchase plan show how much ground Novo Nordisk has already covered. Between 28 September and 2 October the group bought back 1,225,000 of its own B shares for 307,428,837 DKK. Since the programme began on 4 February, repurchases had reached 36,604,179 B shares by 2 October, at a total transaction value of 10,247,270,869 DKK.

The framework allows for up to 15 billion DKK over twelve months from 4 February 2026, leaving the company with only a modest slice of firepower remaining to retire stock on the open market.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

FDA Extends Denecimig Review

On the regulatory front, Novo Nordisk absorbed a delay roughly two weeks ago when the US Food and Drug Administration extended its review of Denecimig, a treatment for haemophilia A, citing ongoing remediation work at a manufacturing site. The agency has not set a new decision date, though it found no problems with the submitted clinical data on the drug's efficacy or safety.

Management sees no financial constraints from the extension and has said it does not affect the 2026 financial outlook. Assuming a successful approval, Novo Nordisk is targeting a US launch in the first half of 2027.

Liver-Fat Data and a Licensing Deal

In its core obesity franchise, fresh study results emerged roughly two weeks ago at the European diabetes congress EASD 2026. An analysis showed Wegovy brought liver fat down to normal levels in nine out of ten adults with obesity and fatty liver disease.

Further OCTANE trial data found that patients switching from injectable GLP-1 drugs to the Wegovy pill lost an average of 4.1 percent of body weight after three months, provided they stayed on treatment. The company flagged the methodological limits of what was an observational study. For the candidate CagriSema, Novo Nordisk reported favourable effects on organ and bone measures as well as a reduction in food cravings, alongside altered brain responses to high-calorie cues and a decline in visceral fat in adults with type 2 diabetes, with early findings pointing to preserved bone health during weight loss.

The pipeline also got a boost about two weeks ago through a licensing deal with Hengrui Pharma for the drug candidate HRS-1596, granting the Danes exclusive rights to develop, manufacture and commercialise it outside mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

Market Reaction

Investors have responded cautiously to the mix of capital returns, approval questions and research data. The stock closed Friday at 34.40 Euro, a daily gain of 1.3 percent, and traded at 34.41 Euro pre-market. Since the start of the year the share is down 22 percent. Shares have added 2.9 percent since the buyback details were announced just over a week ago, and 4.1 percent since the FDA extended the Denecimig review roughly two weeks back.
